Howard William Barben 1912 ~ 2008 Our beloved, ever-optimistic father, Howard William Barben, age 96, passed away October 16, 2008 of causes incident to age. He was born September 25, 1912, in Park City, Utah to William Jacob and Ruth Hazel Scott Barben. Howard grew up on a farm and learned the value of hard work. He lived most of his life in West Jordan, graduating from Jordan High School. He served an LDS mission in the East Central States. He married Laverne Nielson in the Salt Lake Temple on May 10, 1939. Laverne preceded him in death, and he married Carol Palfreyman January 12, 1985. Carol also preceded him in death. Howard worked for the American Oil Company for many years and was the building manager for 20 years. He was a West Jordan City councilman. Dad loved his callings in the LDS Church and served faithfully as bishop, stake president, stake patriarch, temple sealer, and mission president in Alaska. He made personal sacrifices to donate much of his estate to LDS universities. Howard and Laverne had seven daughters. Dad's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his daughters: Janeal (Norman) LeBaron, Bonnie (Douglas) Richards, Carol (Randolph) Taylor, Colleen (Terry) Loosli, Eileen (Craig) Wardle, Trudy Draper; son-in-law James Pingree; 41 grandchildren and 86 great-grandchildren; sisters Janet Divett, Albuquerque, and Margaret (Dean) Butterfield, South Jordan. Howard was preceded in death by his daughter Janice Pingree. Funeral services will be held Mon., October 20, 2008 at 12 noon in the West Jordan Utah Stake Center at 7000 S. 2700 W. Viewings will be at the church Sun., October 19 from 6-8 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 20 from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment: West Jordan City Cemetery. The family expresses sincere appreciation to Harmony Home Health Hospice, especially Tammie and Vicky for their loving care. Directors Independent Funeral Service.
