A dog deterrent works great. There are several available commercially. The dazer was the one our son uses and has had no problems.

Joseph:
Hundreds of people are bitten, severely, by dogs each year in Argentina, and at least once a month one dies. If you don't believe me, just go to any major paper--La Nacion, Clarin, La Nueva Provincia, etc..and do a search.
That isn't to say the young man isn't overreacting a little, just that his fears might be more than justified.
Doing what the natives do doesn't always work, especially if the dog that comes after you isn't a street stray but rather someone's guard dog who has gotten out. Running at a Dogo Argentina would mean a quick trip to the ER if not the morgue.
Sis Rothamer:
Have your son go to a surplus store or somewhere they sell firearms or camping gear. Chances are they have a type of mace or pepper spray there he can buy and carry with him. If not, there are sites on the internet that teach you the basics of what to do when in a serious dog situation, including ways to kill them if needed. |

I was in Bariloche for 6 months and never had dog attack problems. How long has he been in the mission?
If he is afraid of dogs, that is the problem. In Argentina, everytime I got off the bus in a new area, I'd find a good rock. One that is the right size to keep in my pocket and would throw well. The dogs in Argentina are constantly pelted with rocks and they know human body language leads to that. When dogs threaten you, even the action of bending down to get a rock will normally send them running. In extreme cases I had to challenge the dogs directly. A companion and I in Ushuaia had an extremely difficult time with a particular dog on one street that threatened us every time we got within 2 blocks. One day we rounded the corner and the dog came out barking. We both just ran straight at the dog, he took off, and after that he would always go hide when we turned onto that street.
Tell your son to be aware in the streets. He needs to know what is around him at all times. It's easy to get caught up in conversation with a companion, but he should get the hang of always looking around at the same time, not only for dogs.
p.s. I wouldn't try and send him any sort of pepper spray or mace or anything like that, it could be a customs nightmare. Remind him that millions of people live in Argentina and deal with the dogs everyday just like him, without the use of sprays. |
