dog attacks 08 Dec 2005
I was in Bariloche for 6 months and never had dog attack problems. How long has he been in the mission?
If he is afraid of dogs, that is the problem. In Argentina, everytime I got off the bus in a new area, I'd find a good rock. One that is the right size to keep in my pocket and would throw well. The dogs in Argentina are constantly pelted with rocks and they know human body language leads to that. When dogs threaten you, even the action of bending down to get a rock will normally send them running. In extreme cases I had to challenge the dogs directly. A companion and I in Ushuaia had an extremely difficult time with a particular dog on one street that threatened us every time we got within 2 blocks. One day we rounded the corner and the dog came out barking. We both just ran straight at the dog, he took off, and after that he would always go hide when we turned onto that street.
Tell your son to be aware in the streets. He needs to know what is around him at all times. It's easy to get caught up in conversation with a companion, but he should get the hang of always looking around at the same time, not only for dogs.

p.s. I wouldn't try and send him any sort of pepper spray or mace or anything like that, it could be a customs nightmare. Remind him that millions of people live in Argentina and deal with the dogs everyday just like him, without the use of sprays.

dog problems 05 Dec 2005
My son is currently serving in Barilouche and both he and his companion have been attacked by individual and packs of dogs. He is asking for something that will repel these dogs but can't send pepper spray (because it is an aerosol) through the mail. Any ideas?

Como México no hay 2 04 Nov 2005
Disculpen... otra vez soy yo, Ex Elder Pérez.
