Crazy Colchón Story 22 Apr 2003
So coming back at cha' from Utah. This one takes place in Rosario de la Frontera. Elder Gomez and I were striking out all over the place! We had like 5 baptisms fall through, and it was some crazy stuff that prevented them. One family had three kids that REALLY wanted to get baptized, but the kid’s parents were getting money from their grandparents to help with monthly expenses, and the grandparents said they would cut them off if they let them get baptized. There were also only about 11 members going to church at that time, and a crazy number of inactives that would not let us see them. Well Gomez and I were teaching a great kid. The discussions were going great! He was about 14, and he was reading everything we gave him to read, and he was understanding it too. He said he wanted to get baptized and we had a date set. Well around the fourth discussion he got sick, and when we went to see him his mother answered the door and told us to never come back. We were totally perplexed! They were always so cool about us being there before, and the kid really wanted us to be there. The mother said that we were evil and that her son had seen strange things while he was sick that helped her to know we were sent from the devil. She said that her son had a vision of a walking colchón (mattress) that talked to him. It didn't say anything about us, but the mother thought that this was an evil sign. What really happened was the kid had a high fever and he was hallucinating! Well we got to talk to him one more time and that was it. He told us he better not talk to us again, and that was another one that could have been. I am sure that some day he will accept the gospel, because he had an exceptional spirit and something like this will not hold him back forever. Thanks to all the members that helped us there. :)
