Catch the Bus 01 May 2003
So here we go again! Office Elders are always so casual about stuff like people getting back to their areas on time! This story is about just that. This story takes place in the last month of my mission. My going home circumstances were a little different from the normal. My twin brother saved his mission in Chile, and he was getting off about three weeks later than me, and my parents were coming down to pick us up. They were coming to Argentina first, so to make a long story short I went to the mission offices with my group to have the whole mission dinner with all the guys that were taking off that month. We stayed in the hotel and talked of some sweet mission experiences that we had, and then the next day I cried when I had to say goodbye to all of them as I watched them fly away. I was staying for another three weeks before my parents would get there, and off I would go back to my area to serve the Lord. Talk about trying not to be quemado, it was TOUGH! The next day I was going to take the bus back to my area in Santiago del Estero. Well my bus was leaving around the same time as lunch and the office elders that were supposed to take me to the bus wanted to eat before taking me. Instead of getting something fast they wanted to go to a pizzeria and have a nice sit down lunch. I was all over them telling them that I was going to be late for the bus but they were not too concerned about me getting there. Well I went with them and I was watching the time tick closer to my bus leaving. They were leisurely eating lunch and saying, "You know the bus is never on time." Well by the time we got there the bus had left! We missed it by about 5 min. One of the office Elders said, "You know what? I think we can catch it!" So we piled in the car for a bus chase! We went speeding through the streets and up the hill out of Salta. You know that Elders must have a million guardian angels each because by the way they drive they should get into a ton of accidents. At this time they were fixing the roads just out of Salta, and so it was a gravel, off road chase in the Peugeot sedan to get that bus. We caught the bus about 10-15 min out of Salta, and they must have thought we were crazy trying to flag them down. We didn't even think that they might have a policy of not stopping for crazy people trying to flag them down. The bus driver did finally stop, amazingly! When I got on the bus the driver gave me a mean look, but the stewardess seemed to think it was funny that we flagged them down. She told me that she had told the driver to stop because she had heard the discussions before and she thought the Elders were great. So I caught the bus and got a reference from it! I got to see a cool movie too called "Undercover Blues." That is a very funny comedy and I recommend it. So I guess everything did work out fine just like the Office Elders said. :)
