Eye Of The Storm 12 Jul 2006
It was only a couple of weeks away before I was to be transferred from Dubbo to the Blue Mountains. In the previous weeks, we had experienced scorching hot weather (ie 47 degree heat being the hottest). Within a day or so the weather changed dramatically, and the town was fore-warned of a possible "Dust Storm." It wasn't clear how serious it was going to be, but it was mentioned to us by some members that now and again their were fatalities due to the storm's severity. We were fed early by a less active family, and my comp. (Sis. Mann) and I noticed that we for once had some free space showing on our blue planner. We both agreed to stop off at our flat (for what ever reason, I can't recall) maybe because it was the impending storm, and fear of being caught in it while driving. Anyway we proceeded towards our flat. I vividly recall while waiting at the traffic lights, not to go home, I looked at my companion, and she too felt the same feeling. We made a spontaneous decision at that moment not to go home, but to visit an elderly lady whom we tracted out earlier in the week. We reached her house, as the dust slowly started enveloping the town. She welcomed us with open arms, and was pining for us to stop by. As soon as we sat ourselves on her couch. The Dust storm hit in a major way. We knew then how severe the storm was, it was quite frightening. A combination of noises were heard around town, car and house alarms sounding off, corrugated iron roofs rattling violently, and to top it off there was a huge "Black Out". Dubbo was in total Darkness (LITERALLY). It wasn't until the following morning that we heard someone had died in South Dubbo (where we lived) when a piece of corrugated iron roof despatched itself from a sport's shed, late afternoon, I had estimated it would have been around the same time, my companion and I had made plans to travel back to our flat. Wow! It always pays to listen to the still small voice, who fore-warned us, and protected us from harm and danger. It always pays to be an "Obedient Missionary" especially if you get to serve in DUBBO....
