The Skid 09 Jul 2001
Heres a story that really freaked us out one morning. (no names will be mentioned to save the others involved from embarassment! haha!) My companion and I were based in Mt Hutton, newcastle, we had to pick up the companionship from belmont and head over to Toronto for a district training meeting. we were running a bit late and the road was still greasy from the rain during the night. My comp was at the wheel and performed a daring yet timesaving manoeuvre that put us 2 cars ahead in the traffic. in laymans terms we overtook 2 cars on the left , the second of the 2 having to slam on his brakes to let us swerve back in front of him or we'd have ended up as road kill on the back of old Bernie Hodsons ute parked on the side of the road. We knew that driver would be mad so Zi... oops ... I mean my comp decided it was time to speed off and away and if anyone knows VioletTown rd in newcastle , add some surface water and you've got some wet n wild mayhem. So we're speeding over the peak of a rise in this country road with a sharp bend to the left and just as we go over the rise and onto the downhill slope the car goes into oversteer, the back of the car had slipped out from under us, and this is where it got really weird, we all agreed that it seemed to happen in slow motion. We were just fishtailing all over the road, one moment we were sideways in our lane the next we were completely in the oncoming lane skidding the opposite way, the car even skidded in the gravel road shoulder a few times. Then we saw a car coming around the bend right at us since we were in its lane and we all braced for the impact but miraculously there was none. thankful for that, however we still were not safe as we were still skidding this way and that on the wet road. While the two in the back seat were screaming high pitched screams of terror I was just thinking that I had to do something rather than sit there and wait for friction to do its thing so I grabbed the hand brake and pulled it as hard as i could, this caused the car to just spin on its own axis a few times and we came to rest, finally, on the gravel beside the road but with the car facing back up the hill. we all checked each other and when we realised we were all safe and no one was hurt we quickly jumped out and pretended that we intended for all of this to happen because it was right about this point that the two cars that we had earlier overtaken were now driving past. so there we were acting all cool like we had intentionally performed that evil knievel skid when really our hearts were pounding and the Elder from Grantsville, Utah was checking his pants trying to hide the wet patch between his legs. anyway when the smoke and dust had all settled we hopped back in and continued to the district meeting, we were quiet at first then we all just broke out in laughter, it was a weird first reaction cos we had almost just died and here we were laughing about it, what I was dying to know was if anyone else had seen the car coming around the bend right at us, i know I had seen it , it was no more than 5 metres away from me when I braced for the impact, one which never happened. after a few minutes one of the 2 in the back seat asked if any of had seen that other car as well, we all saw it too, we dont know what happened to that car cos it was definitely gonna hit us but it never did, though we did have a good laugh and think it was all a bit funny I took a little time out right there to thank my heavenly father for watching out for us. when we arrived in tornto that morning we got out again and checked the car over, we saw the scrape marks on the tyres that were made from when the car was skidding sideways. Later that evening our two companionships were on our way to the same dinner appoinment so we decided to go back to where it had all happened to try answer some of the questions we had about this other car, look for skidmarks etc, anything, but we found nothing. only our tyre marks on the road, some here, some there , some long ones, some in the gravel , all on a downhill stretch of road about 50 metres long , we knew it had probably only been a matter of seconds but it did seem like it took ages and was in slowmotion. Heres another freaky thing that happened, we took photos of the tyremarks on the road, some of us posing next to them etc when I developed my film there were no marks on the road in any of the shots, even on my comps roll of film, couldnt see any of it. We dont know if it was because dusk was setting in and there was a lack of light or whatever other reason they never showed up even though we did see them with our own eyes. a few weeks after this had all happened they put up posts with reflectors alongside VioletTown Rd on the gravel road shoulders , if those posts were there when we had our silly skid we would definitley have smashed into some of them and wrecked the car. when I think back now I know someone was watching out for us. weird as it may have been for us it did strengthen my testimony that our Father in heaven does love us and does protect his missionaries, even naughty speeding ones from huntington beach CA! (love ya bro!)
