The North Region makes up almost half of all Brazil's
territory. Its area is almost entirely
covered by the broad expanse of the Amazon
Rainforest, a true adventurer's paradise.

Nature is the dominant force in the region dictating
the lifestyles of plants, animals and even
man. There are 1,800 species of birds, 250 varieties
of mammals and 1,500 species of fish
populating the region with an unmatched array of
colors and sounds.

During last century's rubber boom, the Amazon region
was the world's largest producer of
natural rubber.

Even today its cities bear the reminders of that era
of great wealth and luxury. Manaus, a
bustling free port and a modern city of fine hotels
and restaurants, also has a Free Trade Zone
where imported goods from all over the world are
available duty-free. It is one of the gateways
to the region.

Information from the Amazon region

Deep within the Amazon, about 16 hours down stream from the Amazon capital city of Manaus is a small island called Tupinabarana and the city of Parintins. Located on the banks of the Amazon, Parintins is a very civilized city. The city is very historical. Established in the 1800's during the big rubber boom the native indians of Parintins were put into slavery. During the slavery period, the natives were restricted to their homes. As a form of entertainment , a small design of a bull was designed out of a towel. That was the begin of the Bull Caprichoso. --------------------- - - - - - - - -

These links also have information about the "Festa do Boi Bumbá" from the city of Parintins. That is very educational.
