An executive of a major Brazilian television station that broadcasts internationally paid respects Feb. 10 to President James E. Faust as a fellow citizen of Sao Paulo.
President Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency, was named Honorary Citizen of Sao Paulo in 1998 by the Sao Paulo Municipal Council in honor of his many years of service to Brazil, beginning in 1939.
He was visited by Amauri Soares, executive director of Globo International Ltd., a part of Globo Television of Brazil.
Mr. Soares was in Salt Lake City to receive an award presented at the capitol rotunda from Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff for the company's efforts to educate the public about the dangers of substance abuse. The television station aired a program about the efforts of law enforcement officials to deal with the growing problem of drugs.
Mr. Soares expressed appreciation for the opportunity to meet President Faust and explained that his company has made a commitment to help people understand the dangers of drug abuse.
President Faust thanked the executive for his visit and encouraged him to continue in the effort against drugs.
Globo TV also has provided extensive national coverage of and cooperation with the Church's Brazilian service arm, Helping Hands. Helping Hands coordinates Latter-day Saint service projects on a wide basis according to community needs.
