Elder Reeve's Passing 17 Sep 2005
From the LDS Church News:

Elder Reeve succumbs

Elder Rex C. Reeve, emeritus General Authority, who served for more
than a decade as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, died July 18,
2005, in Salt Lake City. He was 90 years old.
Elder Reeve was sustained April 1, 1978, to the First Quorum of the
Seventy, and was granted emeritus status on Sept. 30, 1989 - among some
of the first General Authorities to receive emeritus status because of
"factors of age and health." (Please see Oct. 7, 1989, Church News.)
The son of Arthur H. and Mary Cropper Reeve, he was born in Hinckley,
Utah, on Nov. 23, 1914. In his boyhood and youth, he drove a hay wagon and
had a newspaper route. Growing up during the Depression, he saw the bank
come and take the family's sheep. "Since those days, I have had a healthy
respect for staying out of debt. I have never felt much like plunging," he
said at the time of his calling as a General Authority. (Please see May 6,
1978, Church News.)
On Feb. 19, 1937, he married Phyllis Mae Nielsen in the Salt Lake
Temple. They were the parents of seven children, 38 grandchildren, 59
great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Sister Reeve died
Oct. 11, 2001. Elder Reeve was employed by the Arden Sunfreeze Creameries,
later known as Meadow Gold Dairy. He worked with the company for 40 years.
A lifetime Scouter, who was one of the first Eagle Scouts in his county, he
served on the Greater Salt Lake Boy Scout Council and received the Silver
Beaver Award.
At the time of his calling as a General Authority, Elder Reeve was
serving as president of the California Anaheim Mission. Before that, he had
served for seven years as a regional representative. He was also a former
counselor in the Jordan River Utah Temple presidency, patriarch, stake
president, counselor in stake presidencies and bishop. As a General
Authority, he served as executive administrator of the British Isles and
South Africa, and as president of the North America Northeast, North
America Central and North America Northwest areas. He was also an assistant
executive director of the Temple Department.

Elder Brandon G. Thurber 15 Jun 2005
The following was a message I received from President and Sister Rasmussen.

Dear Missionaries:

It is with much regret that we inform you of the death of another of the 1999-2002 California Anaheim missionaries. Elder Brandon Thurber died Friday as a result of a motorcycle accident. We attended his funeral today and it was a very special occasion. His wife is a beautiful young woman and our love goes out to her.

We did not receive word of this accident until Sunday and were unable to get out notices before the funeral. However, several returned missionaries were in attendance. Below you will find his obituary and a newspaper report of the accident.

We love you missionaries so very much. Please be careful in all you do. May the Lord bless you always.

Much love.

President and Sister L. Neil Rasmussen

Motorcyclist dies in 12th St. crash

MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE -- A West Haven man died Friday evening after his motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of 12th Street and 1900 West.

Weber County Sheriff Lt. Jeff Malan said the man, who was in his mid-20s, was eastbound on 12th Street on a green light when he ran into a red Pontiac Grand Prix that was making a left turn to go south on 1900 West.

Malan said the man in the car said he saw the motorcycle, but thought he was going to turn.

The wreck happened at sunset, and Malan said the intersection has bad visibility at that time of day because of the angle of the setting sun.

The man in the Pontiac was shaken up, but not injured. The motorcyclist died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

Pictures from Grant 2005 Reunion 14 Jun 2005
Interested Sisters and Elders from the Grant era:

I, Tracie Grant Finley, have posted some pictures from the recent reunion. If I have mislabeled any, kindly let me know (and please forgive any errors). President and Sister Grant knew everyone at the reunion, and could probably label the pictures better, but the pictures reside on my computer. :) President Grant had a wonderful time chatting with each former Elder and Sister. We hope everyone else enjoyed things as much as the Grant family did! Thanks for your efforts-- especially Elder Calder.

Shelly Barton 20 Oct 2004
From President McDonald:

Sister Shelly Barton [Anaheim Mission 1996-1997] passed away October 15, 2004 from complications associated with cancer [Myasthenia Gravis]. Shelly will be remembered by all who served with her for her cheerful disposition, her love of others, and her testimony and love of the Lord. During a relatively short time in mortality, she accomplished many things and had a far reaching influence for good.

Shelly Ann Barton was born 28 September 1975 in Ontario, Malheur, Oregon. Her parents are A. Lynn Barton and Georganna Kay Wynn Barton. Shelly was raised on a farm near Ontario, Oregon and is the third of five children (three brothers, Chad, Alan and Tyler and one sister, Jenny).

Shelly graduated from Ontario High School in 1993 and entered BYU the same year. She attended BYU for three years and then served a mission in Anaheim, California for eighteen months. After returning from her mission she completed the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology.

Shelly was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis a short time after completing her mission. She had surgery to remove her thymus gland, only to find it was malignant. Chemotherapy stabilized her condition, but two years later it returned. Shelly has seen miracles in her life through the power of the Priesthood and much fasting and prayer.

In the spring of 2002, Shelly moved to the Portland, Oregon area where she
obtained a job and planned to work part-time on a master’s degree in speech pathology. However, the cancer returned again and required additional radiation treatments. Although Shelly always tried to appear healthy and active, her health and strength slowly declined. However, she was never one to complain about her problems and remained stalwart and faithful.

During the past few months, she became gravely ill with a respiratory problem, was in and out of the hospital several times, and on 15 October 2004 she passed away after being in intensive care for about two weeks.

Those who know Shelly remember her as being without guile, happy, loving family and friends, a hard worker, organized, kind, and thoughtful. Shelly had the ability to find a silver lining in the most difficult circumstances. She loved her Savior and studied his teachings every day. Shelly has set an example and legacy of love which edified all who knew her.

Those who would like to share special memories of Shelly can send them to Shelly’s parents at 811 Northwest Park Blvd, Ontario, Oregon, 97914 or to President McDonald (James_McDonald@BYU.edu) and he will compile and forward them.

Rasmussen Reunion 21 Sep 2004
Dear Returned Missionaries from the California Anaheim Mission:

A missionary reunion for all California Anaheim missionaries serving from July 1999 to July 2002 (Rasmussen Group) will be held Friday, October 1, 2004 at the Brighton 2nd Ward Chapel. The address is 2561 E. Bengal Blvd. (7800 South and 2561 East) Salt Lake City, Utah. The time will be 7:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. We have not met in this building before. It is called "the middle building" among the Stake people because it sits between two other chapels on Bengal Blvd. and it is white in color.

Please bring your special “goodie” to share with us.

We sincerely hope all of you can attend.

Regretfully, we report the passing of Elder Spencer Whipple who died of a serious blood disease and the untimely passing of Sister Kirsten Esmiol (Spanish speaking) from an automobile accident in Nevada. She was on her way to visit people she taught in the Anaheim Mission. We send our love and condolences to their families.

We look forward to seeing each of you and catching up on “the latest happenings” in your lives.

Please pass this information along as we do not have addresses for everyone.

We love you and care about you and look forward to seeing all of you.

Love,
The Rasmussens

Rassmussen Reunion? 20 Sep 2004
Is anyone aware of a reunion with President Rassmussen? I did not serve under him, but since President Moffitt is still out in the field, I would most likely know a few people that served under President Rassmussen. I hope to see those of you I served with :)

October 2005 16 Aug 2004
This is to all the RM's and SRM'd that served with President and Sisiter Van Alfen.

I have the opportunity to be in Utah in October 2005 and felt that it would be a fantastic chance to see folk from my mission. I was over at Christmas 98 and spent time with the Van Alfen's and found it to be just wonderful. So what I need to know is who could be in Utah for conferance weekend and would be interested in getting together for a reunion.

It will be almost 20 years since I hit the mission....it will be fantastic to see how we all turned out.

Let me know by Email.

Derek's Mission Call 17 Oct 2003
I am thrilled to hear of your mission call, especially to the California Anaheim Mission. I served there from 1986-1988. You are going to meet some very wonderful people. Members of the Church there are very helpful. My experiences were great. They did more for me than I ever did for them. You will thoroughly fall in love with the area and the people. I served English speaking but knew several of the Spanish speaking Elders/Sisters. God speed on your mission.
