Lost Members 28 May 2009
I served in Cabo back in 96-98. I know way back in the 90s. We had a lot of converts from Nigeria. Some of their names were Monday, Esther, Friday, and ......I'll need to grab my journal later.

I'm curious if anyone knows anything about Monday Edegbe. He was in Praia and was baptised in 97. He short, but very muscular. Soft spoken and a wonderful man. Esther also lived by him at the time.

I found an old letter from him and was curious if anyone knew his where abouts. Last I heard he was waiting to receive the Melchezidek priesthood.

If you've got anything I'd appreciate it. It's a long shot, but it might be worth it.

Thanks,

Commuincation 02 Mar 2009
Hi everyone, my son has been in Cape Verde for a couple of weeks now and I have a few questions.

Are the missionaries allowed to email anyone besides their immediate family? I know they don't have a lot of time, but I'm wondering if I'm not supposed to give out his email address or what the rules are. We have a huge extended family!

Are letters sent via pouch mail only delivered with the packages at Zone Conference or would they get them weekly?

How often is Zone Conference? I served in Buenos Aires in the '80s and don't remember! It has probably changed anyway!

Take care,
Thanks!

MTC 19 Dec 2008
Hi,
Thanks to all of you who gave me input on how to help my son pack for this mission. He is now in the MTC! I'm so proud of him.

We're still wondering what other last minute things he should bring and welcome suggestions, since he doesn't leave until February.

missionary moms 23 Oct 2008
Hi, Just thought you Moms out there might like to know about a fantastic site for missionary Moms ( and Dads )
www.ldsmissionarymoms.com
It is a free service, Betty and Karl Pearson run the site. You get put into e-mail groups depending on where your missionary is serving. I belong to a group that covers not only Cape Verde but other African countries. It is a great place to ask questions and get news. As an example, sometimes your weekly e-mail doesn´t arrive and we get worried. Then another Mom on the site will also comment on a lack of e-mail and then we figure out that it was transfers or zone conference or something like that. It really is a great help!

Returning to CV 23 Oct 2008
Does anyone who has been back to CV have any tips for travel, accomodations etc? My wife and I are planning on going but I wanted to get some info from those who had done it. What airline did you use, where did you stay, what did you do, that kind of stuff. I appreciate it.

What to Pack? 20 Oct 2008
My son received his call a couple of weeks ago. We would love current information, particularly any information as to why it is suggested that they only bring two pair of pants.

Also he will be in the MTC during the winter and will need to send his winter clothes back home before he leaves. Any suggestions on this?

finding lost friends 12 Feb 2008
I served in mindelo in 1997 and have always had my letters and packages returned when I have sent them to friends in Cabo. Does anyone know how to locate people there?
Also, do any of you know if Anilda is still active and in mindelo?

Debit Cards 08 Feb 2008
Hi- debits cards do work as we are serving now and use it every week. Credit cards are charged a high fee. Some debit cards have restrictions on out of country use, check with your bank. Zions Bank works just fine here in Cape Verde.

2 Things I wish I had known 10 Oct 2007
If this saves anyone some hassle, it's well worth my time. Here are two things I wish I had known before sending my son to Cape Verde.

Send your son with a CREDIT card, not a debit or ATM card. Nothing but a credit card will work. Also of interest......it takes 8 weeks to Federal Express a credit card to Cape Verde.

Mailing large boxes to Cape Verde is folly! I mailed Christmas as a newbie Mom at about Halloween time. It arrived tattered and beat up in February.

Smaller envelope type packages are much more efficient. I have been averaging about 2 1/2 weeks. This year Christmas will go out in 4 or 5 small packages. Then if one doesn't make it....it won't be a complete bust.

My son loves Cape Verde....especially the people. I am certain he would say this has been the greatest experience of his life.

Language and Travel 14 Mar 2006
I was wondering what kind or Portuguese I will need to learn for my missiion. I would like to look at some books before I leave to get some kind of background. Is it Brazilian Portuguese or some other dialect? I was also wondering how most missionaries get to Cape Verde. Is it by boat or plane? I appreciate any responses, thank you

Faster Mailing 12 Dec 2005
If i remember correctly, placing 'via Portugal' on the bottom was what many people did.

That way the mail goes to portugal then shiping to there. Alot faster then going through africa then there.

Mail to Cape Verde 12 Dec 2005
When we first found out our son was going to Cape Verde, I received an email about mailing things. I think it said that mail arrived faster if you left "West Africa" off of the address, but I can't remember for sure. Does anyone have any hints for getting things there the quickest way possible?

digital pictures 10 Dec 2005
35mil film will probably be your best bet. You can find roles of it on almost any island, and shops to develop it.

The only other option besides trying to send it through email (read 56k modem), or hopeing that your memory card makes it back safely home, is to find a place that'll burn a CD for you. I would think that some places with internet would have a CD burner, if not, there are a few computer stores on some islands that you can check. I'm sure it wont be cheap though. But thats your options if you want digital.

Just make sure not to get it stolen, or broken.

Digital or film camera 08 Dec 2005
You'll run into two problems here. Well, maybe just one. If you bring a digital camera most of the computers run Windows XP and have USB ports, so connecting your camera to the computer isn't an issue. The main issue is the slow internet connection speed. You would definitely need to resize the photos before emailing them so you don't spend all day sending the photos. Another option would be to buy several memory cards and mail them, but then you would have to rely on the Cabo Verde postal service (which isn't that great).

I would bring both. Use the film camera for pictures that you really want to send people. You can develop the film in Cabo Verde or send the undeveloped rolls back home. Either way it will cost the same to you. Just don't use an APS camera, 35mm is the best (for over there). Use the digital camera for everything and bring a few memory cards (1GB cards run about $50 or $60 and hold hundreds of photos).

Digital Camera 06 Dec 2005
Does anyone know the availability of processing digital pictures. Is e-mail available? and will I be able to upload digital pictures to home for storage? Should I take a digital camera or a 35 mm?
