MATT PREECE 02 Oct 2006
His most recent work, as a program officer for the Eastern Nepal/Himalayan region of the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DC sent him to Nepal for the past several weeks. In Nepal, on Saturday, September 23, 2006 Matt was on a helicopter with 23 other passengers (conservationists and diplomats) returning from the handover of a WWF project to the local community when the helicopter crashed, leaving no survivors. As you know, Matt spent years traveling the world performing environmental and animal conservation work that included saving sea turtles in Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands and Baja, Mexico, educating teenagers about ecological issues in St. Croix, and setting up conservation programs in India and Peru. There will be a memorial for Matt on Sunday, October 2nd at 5 pm in Layton, Utah at the Davis Conference Center (1651 North 700 West, Layton, Utah 84041; see davisconferencecenter.com for directions and lodging information or call 801.416.8888). Matt's family says that "any and all friends of Matt are welcome to come on Sunday. It will be a casual gathering to remember and honor Matt. Please let others know we would love to have all those who love Matt there with us sharing him with us." There will also be a memorial service in DC in conjunction with the WWF which looks to be held sometime in December. We will send an update when we have more information. We are putting together a slideshow dvd with pictures of Matt for the service on Sunday. If you have any photos of Matt or Matt and friends that you would like included in the slideshow, please email them to me today or tomorrow by reply email. We are also putting together some "Mattisms" - quotes from his letters, emails, life that reflect his spirit and humor for all to enjoy. If you have a quote or Mattism, please email that to me today or tomorrow by email as well. An example is this quote of Matt sent in by Tyrus "Oatmeal in a cookie is ok, as long as its not overpowering the chocolate chocolate chocolate." August 10, 2006. We would love to hear from many of you so we can create a very rich and deep image of Matt's life. Donations can be made in Matt's name to the World Wildlife Fund ( http://www.worldwildlife.org/ ) the Nature Conservancy ( http://www.nature.org/joinanddonate/donate/), both organizations that Matt worked with and believed in deeply. If you wish to send anything to the Preeces, the address of Matt's parents is: Stuart and Vicki Preece, 1276 East 2675 North, Layton, Utah 84040. Also, please see the request below from Matt's sister in law for memories of Matt which will be compiled into a memory book. With love, Amber Dear friends of Matt- I'm Matt's sister in law and I'm working on compiling a book of memories of Matt for his family. I would appreciate your stories for this memory book! We know how much his friends meant to him and would love to include anything you can think of in the book. Specifically, I'm looking for a short story or two that you think about when you think of Matt. I'd like this to be a book that will capture his amazing spirit. Feel free to offer whatever you can, but I'd prefer specific stories that you think his family would appreciate. I will also try to include photos you might have of Matt if you would like to attach them. If you would like to contribute a photo and story, please send them to me at: janae.preece@gmail.com . Feel free to attach the photos, and I would prefer any stories be attached in a Word document. Also include how you know Matt and please list people in any photos. I need all submissions by October 30th, but if you know you'd like to contribute something but can't put it together before then, please let me know. Also, please forward this on to anybody that you know would want to contribute-I'm not sure how to get in touch with all of Matt's many friends, so please pass this along. Thanks, Janae Preece

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord’s work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
