Letter from President & Sister Horne 08 Oct 2003
Dear Missionaries and friends,
Sister Horne and I thought that we would bring you up to date concerning our lives. First, we wish to express our gratitude to you for the emails, telephone calls, and wedding invitations which we receive. Your updates are cherished, and we hope that you continue.

As you know, the ending of our Church Education System Mission ended differently than we expected. Sister Horne recovered sufficiently that she and I could train our replacements the third week in June, pack up the fourth week, and travel back to Washington July 1 to July 4. We put our condo in Mount Vernon up for sale and five weeks later sold it. We purchased a condo in Salt Lake City two blocks from the Church Office Building and moved to SLC on August 12. We have unpacked and can receive visitors and would love to have you drop in and visit.

We are currently serving a Church Service Part-Time Mission for Welfare/Humanitarian Services in the Church Office Building and the Humanitarian Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. On Mondays and Wednesdays we help the Welfare Missionary Couple obtain, process, and train welfare and humanitarian missionaries going worldwide. This mission is much the same as when we were the Church Education System Missionaries. We also serve at the Humanitarian Center--my wife helps in the Medical Supplies Division, and I will help the trainees who work there (they come from 22 different countries) obtain employment upon completion of their year of training and their learning the English language. On Thursdays and Fridays we are working on our Books of Remembrance and doing Family History Research. Our mission will only last about 1 year. After the year we are hoping that Sister Horne's health will allow us to go on a fourth mission. We are enjoying serving the Lord as missionaries once again--the greatest work on earth outside of the family.

We reside in the Eagle Gate 2nd Ward of the Eagle Gate Stake. My wife is the Ward Music Chairman. I have not received a calling but hope to receive a calling shortly.

Richard, our son on a mission in Germany, will be released November 21. We will pick him up at Dulles Airport in Washington D.C. We have Thanksgiving with our daughter's family in Virginia, visit the temples in Palmyra and Nauvoo and return home on December 5. We will receive a leave of absence from our mission from 12 November to 5 December. We would love to have you visit us any other time.

Sister Horne's health is doing well. She operates at about 90% already and hope that will increase. We are acknowledging the Lord's hand in her recovery. We also have 257 marriages and 9 more that are engaged. What a joy it is to attend the receptions and sometimes the weddings in the temple.

The Lord has blessed us with vey special missions and wonderful people to serve. You are precious to us--let us know what you are doing.

The Lord bless you in all righteous endeavors. KEEP US INFORMED.

Love, President and Sister Horne

PS

Knowing how busy many of your lives have become, we wish to pass along something that was stressed in General Conference, and we know to be true from experience. NO MATTER HOW BUSY YOU ARE, IF YOU RECEIVE A CALLING IN THE CHURCH AND MAGNIFY THAT CALLING, THE LORD WILL MAKE YOU CAPABLE OF PROGRESSING IN ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE--IN YOUR VOCATION AND EDUCATION AS WELL AS BEING A MOTHER IN THIS DAY AND AGE. PRESIDENT MONSON TOLD ME--WHOM THE LORD CALLS, THE LORD QUALIFIES. THIS HAS PROVEN TO BE TRUE.

About eight speakers in the five sessions discussed the horrible consequences of pornography. This means that it is an ever increasing devastating problem. There is a bright hope. THIS ADDICTION CAN BE CURED AND THE PERSON RECEIVE THE LIGHT OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY GHOST AGAIN. I bear testimony to the fact because as a leader some of those over whom I presided did solve the problem.

We love you, President & Sister Horne
