FLOODS IN DR 27 May 2004
Amigos:

It´s a real shame what just happened a couple of days ago in DR, as you may have heard.
Yesterday afternoon the last report included over 300 bodies recovered from the mud (people got drowned in mud, not water) and many more are still ¨disappeared¨.
There´s cases of complete families who have not been found yet and even worse is the case of survivors who lost ALL THEIR FAMILIES, including wives and kids. This is really sad.
International and local help has been contacted and there´s everybody trying to do something for our brothers in Jimani.
Jimani is a south-western town located almost in the middle vertical part of the islad next to the border with Haiti. Most of inhabitants there are haitians who cross the frontier to carry out commercial activities. They are into the deepest state of poverty, believe me.
All TV Channels, banks and big companies here are gathering resources of every kind to help the people there. Just a few houses remained in an area where over 500 houses were built (made of wood, of course...). The river got out from its path and opened a whole new ¨road¨ of stones and mud. Some survivors tell that they woke up when they heard ¨gun shots¨ that finally came to be huge stones coming down from the mountain with the river (a small car size stones!) and a lot of mud. Most of them tried to go out and tell their neighbors to remain in a safe place, but it was too late in most of cases...houses were casted out from their bases with people inside....terrible.
Over 300 bodies have been recovered, but as you know, most of those haitians didn´t have ID´s or were ilegal here in DR, so they were not identified and their relatives fear to identity them, so they don´get catched and taken out of the country, so most of them have been buried in common holes before an epidemy developes in the zone....that´s sad.
Well, right now the authorities are working on vaccination of kids and clearing the zone so people who survived don´t get sick with all the flies and stuff.
You guys just pray for those kids and women who are left alone and I wish the goverment can give proper response to this catastrophe.

Saludos amigos!!! I ran into this site while I was looking for information on the recent Jimani floods. Does anyone know if that area was ever opened to the missionaries, or have any other news on circumstances down there?
