This is a snipet from an e-mail I recieved recently:
"How the Garcia girls lost their accents" by Julia Alvarez, a Dominican writer who migrated to the U.S., and who recently published her third novel, with a year 12 English group of highschool students. The novel deals with the migration of four sisters and her parents from the Dominican Republic to the USA, and all the problems that living between two cultures entails. The book lends itself for engaging the two partner groups into issues of intercultural understanding and learning, which would be our main aim. Approaches and methods (like creative writing, gap-fillers, etc) are negotiable.
