Hello Elder, My son has been serving in the Santo Domingo West mission since January. The good news: People there are very warm and loving. They are so amiable that they will welcome you into their homes and listen to anything you say. This doesn't mean, however that they will be ready for baptism. Also, all of the Elders live in houses with maids who cook and clean for them.
There is not always water in all of the areas. It might be a good idea to bring some of that waterless hand disinfectant. Sometimes in my sons last area they had water most of the time, only in the morning. They bathed in a plastic trash can with cold water. Where he is now they can have a hot shower if they leave the water heater on during the night. Be sure to buy nice slacks that are machine washable. There are lots of dirt streets and lots of mud. My son likes his Dr. Martin shoes with good traction for hiking through trails.
This is a wonderful mission. I think you will learn to love the people. I wish we in the United States were more open and loving as they are there. Write us if we can help you with anything and good luck on your mission Elder.
