Mes dix centimes 24 Mar 2003
I don't know exactly why I feel impressed to add my 10 centimes but I do-so I think I will. This weekend, I have watched way too much of the news coverage. But I feel a need to know what is going on with our troops. The more I watch however the more frustrated I become at how open everyone is with what is taking place. With my oldest brother being a combat engineer in the 4th Infantry Division (he drives an armored combat earth mover which supports the main battle tanks by digging their battle positions for them and knocking down anti-tank obstacles putting him at the front) I am all too concerned with the prospects of his involvement. Jan 23 his unit loaded up their equipment on the ships to disembark in Turkey. Funny how the Lord somtimes answers prayers. For an extra two months I have been more involved with my "black sheep" of a brother and have come to miss him more in my life-escpecially since he has been inactive for 1987. I'm rambling I know but hey, it's better than bashing on a french politician right? The bottom line is...who knows? I know that I must uphold the articles of faith and in so doing acknowledge that I am subject to a governing body. The french are too. So are the canadians. If it makes us feel better to communicate our ideas, then please let's do so. But let us be considerate of each others feelings and especialy each others families and ancestries. My granddad (who was a WWII airborne medic in the 82nd who carried with him daily the reminder of St Mare Eglise where he jumped on D-day to do his part in reducing tyrrany just a little by his actions and sacrifice) once told me to focus on my temple recomend. So long as I felt good about holding that recomend I was ok. The minute I didn't I needed to see my bishop. Let me take it a degree further and remind us that we all may someday bump into each other in a temple some where. In our communicating of ideas with one another, let us not say something that may keep us from standing in a circle, side-by-side, and feeling the best about each other in prayer. Peace on earth and good will toward all people does not stop on December 26th.

Stuff 24 Mar 2003
People, people, people....This site is to communicate with each other and relish in our experiences from France. People can say and do as they please, are we all that intolerant that we cannot accept other's opinions without guile and exchange in conversation? This war is an issue that cannot go without debate or conversation. People need to speak their minds and relieve themselves of their feelings and inclinations stemming from this. If this site helps us to do that, then so be it. It does not make us any lesser as missionaries or as people. This is an issue in our lives that needs to be dealt with not ignored. We may all differ in our opinions; that is life. In no way are we dishonoring our mission by speaking about what is on our minds. We are partly or fully products of our mission and those who influenced us, and therefore we have a right to speak that which is on our minds and in our hearts. This does not politicize this site. When I first read some of the messages that were posted concerning this conflict, I may have not agreed, but I thought it was great that people actually wanted to let others know what they thought.
Just chill out and let people do as they please, whether we agree or not. Don't make this more of an issue than it is.

My two cents 24 Mar 2003
I just want to voice my support and agreement for what Joseph Southerland posted to the sight. I feel the same way. We need to be praying not debating. That's all, thanks.

i would also have to agree that we should not us this site as a forum for our political stances however, i think saying what you want abotu france and the us is some what appropriate. why u ask well anyone who visits this site obviously has different ties to the french than do most people. i for one support my friends and aquantances in france no matter what happens. the goverment does not speak for every citizen individualy. i am sure some of us do not agree with bush but do we dislike america, i think not. so all igot to say even if i agree with them or not is i love france and the people there. may god be with them.

To be expected 24 Mar 2003
After the war question was posed, how could you expect anything other than a political debate? I agree however that we should avoid from using this site for posting our opinions on the war. Already several things have been said that I feel was inappropriate for a site where we put the banners of nationality behind us and focus on our common belief in the restoration. So, instead of complaning about war, lets pray for peace. Also, I had heard that Keith Moon had joined the army, and I was wondering if anyone had any news as to his whereabouts. Well, that's it for my two cents.
Much love,
Joe Southerland

France/US Relations 24 Mar 2003
I initially asked the question on France/US relations to see what others thought of the future relationship between our 2 countries as we all have ties to France. I did not do it to instigate political views. Everyone has their opinions. While some I agree with and others I do not, I don't think we should continue to politicize this site and risk harming relationships among ourselves or causing offense to others as this can be a passionate subject. But you are all free to do as you like.

Gospel to taught to every nation 24 Mar 2003
1 NEPHI 4:13 "Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." --- I hope that from this war comes the opportunity for the gospel to be preached in the Middle East where freedom of religion does not currently exist.
D&C 133: 37 "And this gospel shall be preached unto every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people."

The war 24 Mar 2003
Doctrine and Covenants sec. 98, while speaking specifically of the saints' persecution in Missouri, has some rather interesting things to say about warfare, justifications for warfare and blessings that come for those who forgive trespasses rather than seek war.

What the Lord says, of course, lines up perfectly with what He's said before in forgiving our enemies (forgiving seventy times seven, et cetera) IN sec. 98 the Lord establishes criteria that must be met before armed conflict can be justified, but also says (v. 30) "if thou shalt spare him (your enemy), thous shalt be rewarded for thy righteousness; and also thy children and thy children's children unto the third and fourth generation." That sounds pretty appealing to me.

Yes, the Nephites and Lamanites defended themselves against the Gadianton robbers. But the people of Ammon were willing to die rather than sin in killing others. Maybe they know better than the Nephites, Lamanites and the rest of us that the reason we're here on Earth isn't to see who can live the longest, but to become more like our Father in Heaven.

My Dad was a civilian in the Netherlands during World War II, and though he's ever grateful for the blessings that ceme when two Canadians on a motorcycle puttered into his village and told them they were liberated, he'd be the first to say that he who lives bythe sword will die from the sword. He told me once, talking about all those who died during the war, all those who died in concentration camps at the hands of the Nazis, that God was off in some corner of Heaven, crying, but willing to give us the free agency he promised. I'm sure he's in that corner, crying some more today.
