While serving in Pau, way back in 1982, my companion and I decided to ride our bicycles to Lourdes. It will stand in my mind as one of the all-time great rides. We followed the river through some spectacularly beautiful country. We arrived in Lourdes in time to visit the chateau and have a very nice lunch. By the time we went to the cathedral at Lourdes the sweat had dried and we were very much in the mood to learn about the religion and history surrounding such an important place of pilgrimage. It seems that everyone who comes to Lourdes takes home some kind of souvenir. The holy water is everywhere and most pilgrims take home a sample. Some purchase the abundant "Blessed Virgin Mary" bottles but we only drank the water. The true pilgrims follow the advice of Saint Bernadette and eat the grass. As we were enjoying our self guided tour a young man approached me and so surprised me that I couldn't decide whether to laugh right then or save it for later. He very pleasantly asked, in English, if I would like to take a bath. When I realized that he was serious and sincere, I politely responded "thank you, no." We all had a good laugh later that night.
