Babysitting 02 Apr 2006
We were two companionships in Tours in 1984-85. One night, the district leader (who we knew was addicted to practical jokes) said that they had an appointment already and another appointment had come up. They asked if we were willing to meet with this lady who was investigating the church. They said that they had already set up the appointment for 9:00 the next morning. I told them I didn't believe them and that I was going to call to verify. The elders were not concerned, which gave me a glimmer of hope! So I called the lady and said (in my basic French), "nous avons un rendez-vous chez vous demain à 9:00??" (we have a meeting with you at 9:00?) She said "oui, 9:00 avec Jean-Paul" (yes, with Jean-Paul). It did seem strange that she used my first name, but I was so excited to have a real investigator that my mind let that pass! So bright and early the next morn we got on the bus and went all the way across town to find this lady. We showed up, knocked on the door and explained who we were. The lady looked around us like she was expecting someone to be with us and said "where is Jean-Paul?" I explained that I was Jean-Paul, to which she seemed a little vexed and said "I am a babysitter and someone called to ask me to babysit their son named Jean-Paul". We had been had!!
