Historias: A Powerful Moment

| Well, I thought before sharing any humorous stories that I tell one that affected my mission in a very positive (although very sad) way. When President Jimenez died I was in the capital getting my hair cut, and the lady cutting my hair asked if I knew the missionairies that had died. I really thought that she may have been kidding or had mistaken some missionaries from another faith for any missions from any of the missions in Guatemala. I told her that I had not heard of any deaths or accidents of any missionaries, or at least any of the ones that I knew.
After the hair cut though I was very unhappy to hear that President Jimenez, and one of his counselors Julio Afre (that I was unfortunately never able to meet) died in a plane crash in Palencia (my first area). It was very sad and unfortunate news, but it really did not sink in how really unfortunate and tragic it was.
It was not until we were all gathered together at one of the chapels, I can't remember which Zone, but it was permitted for us all to attend, and I was so moved by the strength of the spirit that attended to that congregation. As we sang a couple of his favorite hymns, my heart swelt with such a strong remorse for his loss, and how much his presence would be missed.
For all of you missionaries that served during my time frame, I want to tell you all how much my mission meant to me...it has created a better and more powerful conviction of truth and dedication than I could have ever have imagined obtaining any other way....
I was very blessed and privelaged in serving with you all and pray for all of your success.....! |
