Recently I was contacted by an ex-missionary from the Quetzaltenango Mission (or who claims to have served in that mission) asking for financial assistance in regards to his oldest son's education.
According to this ex-missionary, he was incapacitated from a car accident about a year and a half ago and life has been even harder financially for him and his family.
I was wondering if this ex-missionary has contacted anyone else who served in the Quetzaltenango Mission. I'm tying to find out if this is a legitimate situation/story. If it is, then I want to help.

AIRFARE FROM SALT LAKE CITY TO GUATEMALA IS CURRENTLY 180.00 PLUS TAX.

I was curious if anyone had heard anything about areas in an around Quetzaltenango dealing with the mudslides. I read in the Prensa Libre that parts of San Marcos and San Pedro were literally cut off from Guate and they couldn't send in anyone to help from the capital. Some reports even mentioned Malacatan and Tapachula, Mexico as being severely effected by the flooding and mudslides. Does anyone still have contact with people down there? Have you heard anything?

As many of you know, recently Guatemala was hitted by a tropical depression.
Many people have lost all they have... Missionaries are safe. Members here have gattered to help with donations of food, clothes, blankets and anything that can be of use... Many have volunteered to classify the clothes and food, make packages and have them ready to be taken to these people.
The 10th or 11th, we are receiving a donation from the Church.
The thing that I ask for, is your prayers for our brothers and sisters. Specially because most of the areas that need more help are the areas from the mission.
Pray for them, for all of them. We made a special fast this weekend for them.
I know the Lord will answer our prayers made with faith.

Como muchos de ustedes saben, Guatemala fue golpeada recientemente por una depresion tropical.
los misioneros estan a salvo. Muchas personas han perdido todo lo que tenian. Los miembros se han unido para ayudar con comida, ropa, frazadas y cualquier cosa que pueda ser útil. Muchos han sido voluntarios para clasificar la ropa y la comida, hacer paquetes y tenerlos listos para mandarloa a estas personas.
El 10 u 11 estaremos recibiendo ayuda de la Iglesia.
Lo que yo les pido son sus oraciones por nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Especialmente porque la mayoria de las areas que necesitan mas ayuda son areas de la misión. Oren por ellos, por todos ellos. Nosotros hicimos un ayuno especial por ellos este fin de semana.
Yo sé que que el Señor responderá nuestras oraciones hechas con fe.

Currently there is an airfare to Flores, Peten(Tikal) between 199 and 299 from most US cities. You have to add taxes and fuel surcharges which add about $140 but still this is an incredible fare. The flight is a new Continental flight so this is a promotion you won't see this low again. If you ever wanted to go to Tikal this is the time to do it.
Bus to Guate is about 8 hours now that the road is paved.
Black beans and eggs never tasted so good!

Vamos a ir a Guatemala a reunirnos con nuestro hijo, Elder Sean Stosich, en Junio. Tenemos nuestro vuelo arreglado, pero es todo. Tenemos un amigo de Guatemala quien iba a ir con nosotros al principio, pero los planes cambiaron y nosotros, un par de "gringos" :) vamos a viajar solos. Nos gustaria alquilar un carro y manejar hasta Xela desde la capital, pero pensamos que vamos a necesitar ayuda para hacerlo. Hay alguien alli en la capital quien podiamos contactar quien nos ayudara a viajar hasta Xela? A Sean le gustaria que alquilaramos un vehiculo "SUV" para que podamos viajar hasta Xepon desde Xela, asi que necesitaremos algunos consejos en cuanto a donde alquilar un vehiculo y todo. Si alguno de ustedes, con mucha experiencia en viajar por alli, nos pudiera ayudar, seria una gran cosa!

We are going to Guatemala to pick up our son, Elder Sean Stosich, in June. We have our flight arrangements made, but that's about it. We had a friend from Guatemala going with us at first, but the plans changed and a couple of gringos are heading down there alone. We would like to rent a car and drive to Xela from Guatemala City, but think we might need some help. Is there anyone in Guatemala City that we could contact to help us rent a good car and maybe even travel with us to Xela? Sean would like us to get an SUV so that we can drive to Xepon from Xela, so we need some advice. If any of you, with lots of travel experience in Guatemala could help us out, it would be wonderful!

Hello to All. How are you?
I want to ask for help. I have a very serious problem
with my nephew (who is 3 months old). He was born
with health problems, suffers from hydrocephalus
("water on the brain"), so he needs to have an emergency
operation of emergency, after the last three that he has
suffered, this last one is to change a valve in his small head.
This valve allows him to control the fluids that we
produce in this part of the body. A normal person's body
removes the excess fluid by itself, but in his case, he
can't do it alone. He needs the help of a valve
that removes the excess fluid from the brain and it sends
it through a drain to his stomach. He already has an
an installed valve, but it needs to be changed because
the one he has has many problems.
Friends, former-companions, known and unknown. this
valve needs to be changed as soon as possible. The
big problem is that we cannot find in Honduras the exact
valve. Well, there is one but it doesn't meet the
specifications that the doctors requested of us.
I'm relating this story to know if somebody can help me
obtain this valve in the U.S. If somebody can help me,
please send me an email so I can go into details.
These are the descriptions:
low pressure valve (1-4 cm water/10-40 mm water) [VPS]
[TRANSLATOR'S NOTES. The word cubico in the original is incorrect.
Pressure is measured by height of water, so the cubed part is wrong.
This is a typical layman's error due to unfamiliarity with the science
involved.
The VPS is probably a ventriculopleural shunt, but it can be
ventriculoperitoneal.
That is something that the Honduran doctors would need to clarify.]

but if someone's a doctor, I'd like a translation or a solution to this

Hola a Todos ¿Cómo están? bien deseo pedir ayuda, tengo un problema muy serio con mi sobrino (Que tiene 3 meses), él nació con problemas de salud, sufre de HIDROCEFALIA, pues necesita practicársele una operación de emergencia, después de las ultimas tres que ha sufrido, esta ultima realizarle el cambio de válvula en su cabecita.
Esta válvula le permite controlar los líquidos que producimos en esta parte del cuerpo. Una persona normal bota los residuos de estos líquidos por el mismo cuerpo, en el caso de él no lo puede hacer por si solo, requiere la ayuda de esta válvula que saca los líquidos extra del cerebro y los manda a través de un drenaje que llega hasta su estomago.
Bien el ya tiene una válvula instalada pero requiere hacer el cambio por que la que tiene esta presentando muchas fallas. Amigos, Ex-compañeros, conocidos y no conocidos. Esta válvula hay que cambiarla lo mas pronto posible, el gran problema es que no la encontramos en Honduras la Válvula exacta para el, bueno hay pero no con las especificaciones que los médicos nos piden.
Relato esta historia para saber si alguien puede ayudarme a conseguir esta válvula en los U.S. si alguien puede ayudarme por favor mandeme un correo para dar mas detalles.
