General Facts about the Church in Japan


 

  - As of 2002, there are 117,637 members in Japan. 

 - As of 2002, there were 30 Stakes in Japan.  There were also, 19 districts, 172 wards, 142 branches, and 7 missions

 - Sacrament meeting attendance for 2002 is 18,579

 - In 2002 there were 915 missionaries, (213 local missionaries), 1194 convert baptisms, 8,355 recommend holders, 50,043 temple endowments performed, and 182 meetinghouses owned.

 - The Fukuoka Stake was organized April 20, 1979

 - The Kumamoto Stake was organized May 18, 1997

 - Missionary work in Japan began on August 12, 1901, when Elder Heber J. Grant, of the Quorum of the Twelve, and the missionaries Horace S. Ensigh, Louis A. Kelsch, and Alma O. Taylor arrived in Tokyo.

 - The Tokyo Temple was announced in August of 1975, and dedicated October 27, 1980.

 - At the October 1997 general conference, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that smaller temples would be built throughout the world.  The Fukuoka Temple was announced the following year on May 7, 1998, and dedicated June 11, 2000.

 - The Church published a new Japanese translation of the Book of Mormon in 1995.  The Book of Mormon is now entitled "Morumon Sho" rather than "Morumon Kei".  ("sho" is the same kanji used for "kaku".)  The Pearl of Great Price is now entitled "Kooka na shinju" rather than "Kooka naru shinju."
