Area Basketball Star Killed in Japan (Article)

A former Standout Cardston high school Basketball player died Monday in a traffic accident in Japan.

David Boivie, 20, was riding his bicycle in Sasebo when he was struck by a car and killed. Sasebo is about 50 kilometres north of Nagasaki on the Japanese island of Kyushu.

Boivie, who had grown another inch to six-foot nine-inches while in Japan, left Canada in may 1988 to serve a two-year mission with his church. He was due to return in May 1990.

Before Leaving on his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Boivie played basketball at Ricks College in Idaho after receiving a scholarship when he graduated from Cardston High School in 1987.

Boivie was a two-time member of Canadian championships both years he played.

His coach for those teams, Tim Rollingson, said this morning Boivie was a natural leader.

"I think David was an outstanding example of being a gentleman and sportsman and when you combine that with the talent he possesses, those are rare qualities," said Rollingson, a coach at W.R. Myers in Taber.

While playing high school basketball, Boivie was named a 4A allstar.

Funeral arrangements are still being made as the body has yet to be released from Japanese authorities.

Boivie's family is hoping arrangements can be completed in time to hold the funeral Saturday.

And as we often remember him...
