I have hundreds of slides, photos, recordings, journal writings, and other things that might be of interest to you... you are welcome to access whatever I might have.
And let's band together for a reunion sometime soon, eh?
By the way, the story behind that photograph:
Preparation day, Monday 14 March 1977, I was in Ise-shi, Mie-ken. One day my companion, Ricky D. Owens, and I were cycling down the Isuzugawa riverbank, sakura blossoms ready to bloom. I saw what looked like the S- shape of a snake on the road, and got ready to give it a wide berth. Instead, I passed a broken black and white steering wheel cover.
Surprised at how real it appeared, I cycled slowly past, suddenly remembering the vituperative words of Zone Leader Elder Kraig Raines, "Man, I hate vipers!" I smiled and went back to pick up the cover, an idea already forming.
Back at the apartment, I glued two white pill "eyes" and two toothpick "fangs" to one end of the steering wheel cover. Then I carefully fed it over the coiled corkscrew spiral of a bent coat hanger, and voila! my deadly viper was ready.
When Zone Leaders Raines and Winget visited next, I waited until Elder Raines was busy downstairs. I went back upstairs first and placed the coiled viper just out of sight on the edge of the second floor landing.
When Elder Raines' head popped up over the last stair, the unusually steep wooden staircase put his face about 20cm (~12") from the fangs of my viper... eliciting an involuntary scream from the otherwise unflappable 2-meter tall (6'3") Raines. The other Elders-- Bagley, Owens, Skousen, and Winget, previously out of sight-- rolled on the floor as if to split a gut.
Without missing another beat, Elder Raines picked up the snake and innocently entered the room saying, "Anybody forget this?" |
