Church Buildings 28 Apr 2008
In my two years in Hokkaido (1991-1992), I served in four areas, three of which were branches and met in less than desirable circumstances. In Tomakomai we met on the second floor of an office building, which was actually pretty nice, but had no carpet, no class rooms, and of course, no font. We had a wooden box with a big blue tarp that was kept in a storage room that we filled up for baptisms. In Nayoro we didn't even have a church...we commuted to Shibetsu where we met in an old house. This building was a good place for this little branch, except when we had a baptism. We had to rent the ofuro down the street for that. I swear we about drowned our investigator trying to get the baptism dress fully submerged in 14-inches of water! My third area was Asahikawa, where they had a very nice church building. From there I was transferred to Shinoro, where at first we were a part of the Shinkotoni Ward, but about two weeks after I was transferred there, the Shinoro branch was created. We met in the second floor of this extremely old building by the eki. Our district spent an entire P-day sanding and re-finishing that old hardwood floor. That old building was pretty rough, but that was where the Shinoro branch was born, and I have many good memories of that place. Most of my memories of my mission took place in these make-shift churches where the local Saints made sacrifices weekly to worship the Lord. It is such a wonderful blessing to see that every one of these areas now has a "real" church building to meet in.
