Keitai Denwa (Cell phones) were distributed to all companionships in the Sendai Mission at the end of 2008. As a result, all apartment phones have now been shut off. A letter from Elder Evans, the Area President, announced this new development in the world-wide missionary effort. The letter indicated the purpose of the cell phones is to make missionaries more available at all times to mission presidents, investigators, members etc. Obviously there are restrictions to cell phone use, but everyone seems to agree this is a positive step in missionary work efficiency.
