Running into the Buch 29 May 2009
President and Sister Bird, who lived in our ward in Springville, were called in 2002 as Sendai mission presidents. (I had served in Sendai 1979-81.) While the Birds were serving, in 2004 we went to Sendai to visit them, as well as two Japanese families I taught on my mission. I had everything all planned out via Japan Travel Bureau. We arrived on July 24th and caught the shuttle from Narita into Tokyo to go to the temple. We hadn't even exchanged money yet, but had Shinkansen tickets for the trip to Sendai. After several subway stops and leaving our luggage at Ueno in lockers, we got to the temple, but learned we had just missed the 1st of only two sessions that day. We were sunk. We couldn't do the 2nd session and make the Shink on time. My wife said, "I didn't come this far to not go to the Temple".

Well, we walked back toward the subway and found an ATM and got yen, on a Saturday. In the same mall was a JTB office which was able to change our Shink tickets. We got back to the temple and there was an English-speaking temple worker at the recommend desk. He directed us to the cafeteria, and when I opened the door I ran right into President Sakai, my mission president from 20-plus years earlier. He had just come off a sealing session, and Sakai Shimai was working that session also. Had we made the 1st session we would have missed them. I was able to sit by the President during the session, and my wife was assisted by the only English-speaking temple worker available that day. When we arrived in Sendai and told President and Sister Bird our story, and they said, yup. That kind of thing happens everyday! No coincidences!
