Alan served an honorable mission in the Japan Tokyo Mission from 1972 to 1974. He married Judy Marie Rucker in the Los Angeles Temple on May 9, 1975. Alan and Judy had two children, Crystal Lynn Pannell (March 28, 1980) and Jeffrey Alan Pannell (April 3, 1983). Alan earned a BS in Industrial Arts Education from BYU in December of 1977. After completing his degree, Alan and Judy moved to Fernley, Nevada where he began his teaching career. He taught for 28 years, mostly for grades 6, 7, and 8. He remained an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in various capacities. He died unexpectedly on July 10, 2006 while hiking on Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park of an apparent heart attack. He is greatly missed by his wife, children, family members, friends, and students. He was an amazing individual and touched countless lives for good.
