In Memoriam - Etsuko Saito 19 Sep 2007
Those who spent time in Chiba may remember Etsuko Saito, a lovely, remarkable woman who touched many lives and showed a particular kindness to missionaries. Saito-shimai passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2007 following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Over the years, the Saito Family welcomed countless missionaries into their home, sharing heartwarming company and delicious meals. Saito-shimai was particularly famous among missionaries for her wonderful apple pies. Some of us were fortunate enough to stay in contact with her for many years after our missions ended. The door was always open and we were always welcome in her home. For so many of us, some of our fondest memories of Japan were created there.

Saito-shimai was one of those rare individuals for whom doing the right thing, the better thing or the nicer thing never seemed to involve any hesitation. She exuded warmth and a sense of humor. She smiled and laughed a lot, even in the midst of her greatest challenges. Saito-shimai was unfailingly gracious, always thanking those who stayed in touch, modestly unaware that she was so much more of a blessing in our lives than we could ever have been in hers.

Together with her husband, Saito-shimai raised three beautiful children, all of whom have grown into delightful, accomplished and outstanding adults. She was a dedicated mother who loved all of her children deeply, and respected each as an individual. Her children and their families are the best part of the wonderful legacy that she leaves.

To Saito-shimai’s loving husband, her children, their families and to all her other relatives and loved ones who feel this loss, we extend our deepest sympathies, as well as our thanks for sharing her life with us.
