Dress Standards

Japanese Conservative DressClothing in Japan reflects not only the weather and climate, but also traditional tastes and culture. As a missionary in Japan, you will want to be aware of some dress standards.

Style
There's an old saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." When in Japan, dress conservatively. Businessmen dress very similiar to missionaries. Suits are dark colored and solid in pattern. Men traditionally wear white shirts and and a conservative tie. During the summer months, you will usually see businessmen take off their suit coats. The hot, humid weather can take its toll if you leave on your suit jacket.

Weather
Japanese Dress is also influenced by the weather. It can get quite cold during the winter months, even inside a Japanese home. That's because there generally is no indoor heating, other than maybe a kotatsu table or an indoor kerosene heater. You will want to dress warmly during the colder months. Then when it's the rainy season, Japanese carry an umbrella every where they go. You can purchase an umbrella in many different sizes and colors in Japan.
