In an email from President Botterell:
I thought you might like this information on the Mission. If any of you have received a white envelop. Open it now and tell us if you are the new Uganda Kampala Mission President.
Love to you all

Subject: Division of the mission

> I received word last Friday night from Elder Snow that the 1st Presidency and Quorum of the 12 have acted on the proposal to divide the Kenya Nairobi Mission. The division will be effective July 1st, 2005. We have not yet learned who the new mission president will be (how would you like to be the fellow who just learned he has three weeks to prepare to be at the MTC en route to Uganda for three years?).
>
> The new Uganda Kampala Mission will include Uganda and Ethiopia. The Kenya Nairobi Mission will then include Kenya and Tanzania. Hesbon Usi and Jackson Mkhabela will travel to Kampala next week to search for a mission home and mission office. Bob Eppel and John Elks will come here to Nairobi the following week to discuss budget implications.

> As Elder Snow explained it to me, the decision on the mission boundaries was made to keep the two Swahili-speaking countries together (even though at this time we are precluded from teaching non-English speakers). This is different than the written proposal first submitted by President Botterell and Elder Robert Oakes, but as I understand it that proposal was updated by Elder Golden and Elder Snow recently. When asked, I supported the concept of having a mission president in Kampala. The total complement of missionaries will remain the same; since our current complement is 98, each of the two new missions will have about 50 total - maybe a 54-44 split favoring Kenya/Tanzania.

> Obviously, we're pleased at the development and look forward to a more manageable workload; Lauri and I have taken five preparation days in our first year and have attempted to conduct priesthood and auxiliary leader training in each mission branch (or cluster of branches) quarterly. We'll now be able to do that without killing ourselves. Our airplane flights, which will total 100 in our first year, will drop significantly as Dar will likely be the only flight now. We are struggling with the idea of losing the wonderful members and missionaries we now work with in Uganda and Ethiopia.
>
> We haven't yet had a chance to contemplate all the implications - one will be holding zone conferences in the up-country zones, rather than taking all the missionaries out of their areas for 3 days to attend zone conference - and June will be filled with preparations. We'll let you know more details as we learn them.
