Stories: City Boy in Big Sky Country

| I was raised in a Los Angeles suburb, and had always been near the big city throughout my whole life. Therefore, I was quite surprised (and taken aback) when I received my calling to the Montana Billings Mission.
After four months in Great Falls, I was transferred to the small town of Corvallis. Great Falls had been easy to adapt to because it was the 2nd largest city in Montana. But I knew from the start that Corvallis would be different.
One day, my companion (Elder S. Keller) and I decided to visit a member. When we arrived at his house, we saw him in his field attending his horses. As we walked across the pasture, we came across a thin wire strung up across the field.
I was confused. I turned to Elder Keller: "Now what is this wire doing strung up in a field?" Elder Keller didn't say anything.
We obviously had to get by the wire. So without any thought, I grabbed onto the wire to stoop underneath it. Immediately, I knew something was wrong. There was some sort of pain in my hand and it radiated up my arm. Even in this pain, I did first let go of the wire: I stared at my hand thinking: what is this? What the heck is going on here?
It took me a moment to realize I was being electrocuted! Then I finally let go of the wire.
I turned to Elder Keller: "It electrocuted me!" But he was only laughing. And the member, having seen the events from a distance, came over laughing as well.
I have to laugh as well, 'cause now I realize how much of a city-boy I was in Big Sky Country. |
