| I had been serving in Great Falls, for two months, when I received a new companion. I learned that this Elder was approaching his "Bump Day" and we would naturally celebrate the occasion.
It is tradition that after six months of missionary service, that the missionary should burn a tie. This day is called the missionary's "Bump Day."
Well we had a plan. We didn't want to burn the tie outside, because we're technically not supposed to start fires. In fear of our neighbors called the fire dept. we decided it would be best to burn the tie inside our apartment.
It doesn't sound like a bright plan but we had it worked out. We would simply burn the tie in the bathtub. We thought the tub would be a safe place for it. But at the last minute, we decided instead to hang the tie from the shower-rod.
My companion sprayed the tie extra good with hair spray: we wanted to achieve maximum fiery effect. He lit a match, set the tie on fire and away it went. It was awesome!
But it wasn't long before we both noticed that flames we getting pretty high. (My comp. must've used the extra-hold hair spray.) The flames had climbed up the tie, and we now licking across the ceiling tile.
"Quick!" I yelled, "Get some water!!!" It would have been smart of us to turn on the shower: water was easily at hand. But we stupidly ran to the kitchen, filled turkey roaster and then ran back to the bathroom.
We got the fire out. There was hardly any damage. There was a dark spot on the ceiling tile, and the tie lay melted within the bathtub.
We stood there, silent, thinking how lucky we were. We were staring at the melted heap when the shower-rod broke in two and fell to the tub with a CRASH!!!
We jumped and screamed, at the noise. We hadn't noticed that the flames had melted the plastic rod, therefore causing its destruction. |
