"DA ROCK" 30 Sep 2002
Anyone in the MBM would wonder why(?), from the Ft. Peck to the Rock [Springs]. Mode of travel was by the infamous Missouri (Misery) Valley Trans...took about a day to Billings, and another day via APs. "Mouth agape" was about the only reaction that I could muster when first arriving in the rock. In the summer of 1976 the little sleepy town had mushroomed to about 25,000 trailors, populated by mostly oil rig folks. There were four Wards in the area. The coal mines below the town somehow caught fire and had been burning for years prior. The most astonishing sight was going up onto the high plateaus overlooking the rock, and viewing the almost endless rows of trailer parks....visiting Green River was always a wonderful break from Rock Springs...many P-days were spent there. Contacts were plentiful in the Rock with baptisms a weekly event just about. Elder Craig Spurgeon and I were junior-companions my last four months of the mission.
