Mission Song 23 Jun 2004
I am amazed that the mission song I wrote over 20 years ago is still being used. The original song was very specific to our mission culture under President Ralph Bradley. I never thought that it would continue to have meaning very far beyond the time of my mission.

The lyrics have been revised several times, but a few of them are still mine. When I started my mission, our official mission song was "Love One Another" with a verse added that was specific to our mission. President Bradley asked me to write a new song after I had been out about two months.

Even when the song was new, not everybody liked it, but none of the critics ever submitted their own. I am not offended by anyone's opinion. I even got tired of it by the end of my mission. I have written better songs since then.

In addition to the recent recording, there was one made in the late '80s. I think I have both recordings. I could dig them up and post an MP3 of them somewhere if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the interest. It has been entertaining reading all your posts.

I appreciate and understand that many people liked the mission song...and I respect that. But I think that should run both ways and others who do like it should respect the fact there are those who didn't. Gosh, it's almost like saying you're unpatriotic if you aren't in lock step with everything the government says. No hard feelings, just stating an opinion. :o)

Elders Brent Seavers and Micah Player are the ones that recorded the newer version (clear tape) of the NCCM song. I'll try and dig up my copy and post the recording. Brent Seavers' sister lives next door to me so I can probably track it down through her if I can't find my copy.

I appreciated the mission song. I think it's easy to be critical of something if you haven't ever tried to do it. If you can do better, by all means write another song! It would be great to have more than one song about missionary work in North Carolina. Everyone can have their own opinion, but I like the song and the message. And I'd like to hear more if anyone can come up with another song.

Thank you so much Elder Bishop!!!!! I am surprised at how many music critics that we have. I wonder why all of you are not wealthy or famous for your opinions.
I loved the mission song and the time that I served in North Carolina. I am really tired of receiving such negative messages about a song that didn't appear to mean anything to those sending the messages.

You know I don't care if you think it was a stupid song or the worst song you ever heard. It meant something to me and I know a whole lot of other missionaries that cried as they sang that song for the last time. It might not be a billboard top 40, but it has some good meaning behind it.

I agree...the worst part of any zone conference was having to sing that song. Yeesh!
