Comments:
The years that I spent in Japan were the most formative years of my young life. There were good times and not so good times. They all helped me be who I am now. I married in 1970 to Sharon Sandberg of Hurricane Utah. We have mostly lived in the Ogden, Utah area. We have six delightful daughters and nineteen even more delightful grandchildren. I recently ( 2013 ) retired as an accounting clerk at The Bank of Utah in Ogden. Most of my church service has had the word " clerk" or "secretary " attached to it. I have also led the music in priesthood meeting for about twenty years ( I'm going to have to go on a mission or die to get out of that job ). While in Japan I learned to sing in choirs and I have never passed up a chance since then to sing in a ward or stake choir. Our children have all fledged and flown except for our thirty two year old daughter Elanor who has Downs Syndrome. The three of us consider ourselves " empty nesters ". The three of us may possibly be able to serve a mission next year, we're not sure. I always look forward to the mission reunion every April. It is one of the highlights of my year. I've only encountered three old doryos, so I encourage everyone to get there if possible.

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
