ELDER WILLIAM R. WALKER, 1ST QUORUM OF THE 70 (NFE DA,AK, ’64), REPORTS SAPPORO TEMPLE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
”Initial site preparation work and excavating have been done on the Sapporo Temple. Unfortunately, work has begun slowly on this temple. With winter not too far away, it is reasonable to assume that not too much significant work will take place until Spring 2014.
“We are hopeful the temple will be finished and dedicated in 2016.
“It will be a beautiful temple.”
Former NFE RM, Elder Walker, is in charge of temple building and reports, “You are right, I’m swamped.”

Dear Elder McCune,
I've been getting your voicemails, and have been meaning to call you! Evan and I did get to go home for Christmas to see Mom, who is doing okay. She is 88 and has aged, with forgetting things and not being as sharp, but still the sweet Mother!
Jay is taking great care of her 24/7, and he is a grandpa himself of 6. So now he has 6 kids and 6 grandkids.
Grant also lives there in the condo, and is busy working in the computer/tech/IT world.
Jan will be ending work at her ex-boyfriend's jewelry store where she was for the last 26 years. I'm not sure what she is going to be doing now, it might be hard for her to get a job at 58 (we're all getting older).
I'm still happily working for BYU Alumni in the beautiful Hinckley Center, and Evan will hopefully finish his PhD this year. Although beautiful Hawaii is where we hope to be, with the economy and such, we'll have to see where Evan can find a job after graduation.
We hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas. I was home when Bro. Nishimoto called Mom, and they had a good conversation.

Trudy & husband Rick Olmstead are in Carpentinia, CA. Her husband is a volleyball referee.
Valerie lives 3-4 blocks from Sister Andersen. Her husband is Administrative Director at the Provo Missionary Training Center, mainly responsible for assignment of missionaries to wards when they arrive.
Doug & wife have now moved into the upstairs and Sis. Andersen has moved downstairs in her home. She says it is good to have Doug upstairs and Valerie only a few blocks away.
Sis. Andersen is still working on her autobio-graphy, the most difficult challenge being determining what she should include and what she should leave out since she has so much material accumulated.

We just received our Senior Couple mission call to serve for eighteen months in the Japan Kobe Mission. We go to the MTC on November 18 for one week and then to Japan. Our primary responsibility will be as Member and Leader Support (MLS) missionaries.
Lynne and I are very excited!!!
We will miss serving at the Provo MTC but after nearly five years there... it is time to practice what we have been preaching.

They began their couple mission in the Fukuoka Mission Home Office February 2014.
Vern is a retired employee of the Salt Lake County Tax Commission. Toshiko is a long time member of the Church from the 1960’s and a retired employee of the Acquisitions Department of the Church Family History Library. They will also serve 18 months.
They are long time members of the Dai Ichi Japanese Cultural Ward organized as a branch by Spencer W. Kimball in the early 1960’s and made a ward in 1987. It presently meets in the historic Salt Lake Granite Stake Tabernacle where Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley was called as a Stake President.

Marcia Ann Livingston Hall, 71, of Malta, Idaho passed away Sat, Aug 31, 2013.
Born Feb. 8, 1942. Raised in Shrewsbury, Mass., and attended Boston University. During her senior year in college, she met the Mormon missionaries and gained a testimony and then served a mission in the NFEM 1964-1966. Attended BYU and taught school in Utah, where she met Marvin Hall. Married SLC Temple- June 17, 1971. Moved to Malta and had 4 children.

DWIGHT PINCOCK FUFU IN NAGOYA MISSION HOME!

Thank you so much for your inquiry regarding the lost but found Pincock Fufu! As you are aware by now, I retired from the Missionary Department on the 13th of September 2013, after a 16 year experience that has blessed my life forever.
It has been such a wonderful blessing to be in the presence of so many Christlike men and women who have lifted me to a new level of spirituality and desire to serve more faithfully.
Vellis and I have planned to go to the Holy Land for a long time, so upon retirement we were able to make that desire become a reality. It was a life changing event for us, and we will never partake of the sacrament again without being reminded of the sacred experience we had in the Garden of Gethsemane as we held a Fast and Testimony meeting there with the LDS brothers and sisters in our group.
Within a couple of weeks of our return from that trip we were in the MTC on our way to the Japan Nagoya Mission, to serve in any way the Lord could use us, which turned out to be as Mission Recorder and Comissarian. Someone once said we should never retire from something, we should always retire to something… so here we are.
All aspects of this calling seem to be beyond my capacity, with my limitations with reading and writing kanji, so we have two great Japanese young missionaries that fill that gap in a wonderful way. The language is returning in slower than hoped for increments, but we are having a great time.
Working with President and Sister Yamashita who are dear friends since our days in Fukuoka has been a special blessing as well. It seems like yesterday that we were working together in Fukuoka, but we were called there in 1994, so yesterday seems to come and go these days in 20 year increments. We are anxiously engaged, “lifting where we stand”.
We will miss our yearly reunion with our missionary family… and will especially miss Terry and Karen Jensen’s culinary prowess, which in my humble estimation is priceless. Thank you George for your ever stalwart hand in building the kingdom. Our love to all until we meet again.

JAMES A. MCARTHUR
AND WIFE DENISE, BECOME PRESIDENT
AND MATRON OF NAUVOO TEMPLE!
Jim McArthur (NFE DA,AK ’64) and wife Denise became the President and Matron of the Nauvoo Temple in October 2013. They will serve for 3 years.
Sister Denise McArthur’s father passed away 4 days after Jim and Denise received the call, leaving Denise the sole remaining member of her family.
Pres. McArthur served as Fukuokaa Mission President during the construction and dedication of the Fukuoka Temple 1997-2000 and was instrumental in obtaining a chapel for the Nagasaki Branch Saints.. He later served as the last President of the Tokyo, Japan Missionary Training Center. The McArthurs are long time residents of St. George, UT. Jim developed and ran the Temple View Motor Home in south central St. George on the east side of Main Street.

When you read what I’m doing below, does it sound like I am the Ward Mission Leader in my Ward?
These days as an opening, I ask people I meet, “Do you know the names of your 8 great-grandparents?” So far no one has chosen to be offended.
Often, I give them the My Family booklet recently released by the Church.
Two things I tell them we all have in common are:
1) We are spirit children of Heavenly Parents who love us.
2) We all have ancestors.
Elijah's work of planting in the hearts of the children the promises made to their fathers is at work in the world.
We are trying to help reconnect people to their Father in Heaven and help them make these connections to their ancestors eternal.

JOHN DUNN CHASE
PASSES AT 76 (NFE’PA’57)
John Dunn Chase was born May 17, 1937, in Pocatello, Idaho to Carol Dunn and Amos Bennion Chase and passed away October 23, 2013, at age 76, in St. George, UT, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He was married 42 years to Kathye Mary Henney.
He is a respected father of four children: Jonathan Chase, David (Katie) Chase, Melissa Wells, and Camille (Orlando) Alba.
He is the grandfather of Josiah, Sage, and Micah Wells; Lincoln and Scout Chase; and Jayda and Lyla Alba.
After graduating from BYU in Economics and Asian Studies, he worked in the insurance field for many years. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John valued being a member missionary over any other position he held. After serving a mission in the Northern Far East Mission in Japan, John continued the missionary effort by assisting and encouraging countless young men in their desire to serve a mission.
He helped bring his good friends, the Watabe family, from Japan to the United States. His picture with his typical great smile, along with then Elder, and future Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley, and the Watable family is printed on page 237 of Gordon B. Hinckley Shoulder for the Lord, 1996, Hawkes Publishing Co., SLC, UT, engaging in his typical selfless service to mankind.
For years, John and Kathye welcomed numerous people from around the world and off the streets into their home for extended periods of time – a true shepherd of Father’s children. No one was ever turned away. John always had a joke or a story ready to share, and would follow it with a hearty laugh.
He was a good man and will be dearly missed.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mapleton North Stake Center LDS Chapel located at 475 North 1600 West in Mapleton, UT. A viewing was held prior the the Memorial Service at 10:00 A.M. A graveside service and dedication of the grave was held following the services at the East Lawn Cemetery, Mapleton, UT.
In lieu of flowers, the John Dunn Chase Memorial has been established at Mountain America Credit Union, for those wishing to contribute.
Long may the memory of this great man burn in the minds and hearts of his posterity and NFE comrades.

NEWS FROM THE FRONT
SAPPORO JAPAN MISSION – Pres. Eric C. Evans. During his last year as president in Sapporo, Pres. Evans has a special eternal companion with
extraordinary wisdom in guiding sharers to share with enthusiasm, love, determination, and faith in triumph and even tribulation. The missionaries are receiving a runoff of said wisdom. The sisters evidently have STLs like Zone Leaders specially charged with increasing sister skills and attitudes towards strong leadership and successful sharing, baptism, confirmation, and retention.
One set of STLs entitled their recent counsel “Being A Happy and Confident, Missionary”. Sisters Furue and Sugihara, “with love” signed to their counsel, confessed their weaknesses and inadequacies in the weight of their responsibility to guide and set example for the other sisters by sharing the 3 statements of Pres. Uchtdorf in a GC talk a year ago: 1. Do not fear, I am with you; 2. Love one another, as I have loved you; & 3. Be of good cheer.
They shared “Heavenly Father hears . . . prayers, knows your trials, and loves you more than you can imagine. You are told to love your investigators, members, and your companions.” Companions are sometimes the hardest out of the 3. You are together 24/7. There might be problems, but when you solve the problems, there is love . . . You are able to unite and see miracles.”
A companion wrote a sister little encouraging notes and did little acts of service for her. After the 5th note saying “thanks for always being patient with me, I love you!” the sister realized she was the problem and needed to change. Control & patience ensued!
“ Being of good cheer” happened to this sister when she internalized what a track coach taught her in school prior to her mission: Perspectives of running fast are crucial, but also that she was actually competing with herself - not others. This caused her not to be discouraged and to look and see how far she had come.
Sister Evans penned her usual marvelous advice by entitling it “Dendo Failure” telling of giving an elderly woman Christmas cookies the woman adored but after enjoying them with appreciation “she brought them back to our car saying she couldn’t eat them.” “Our religion is Buddhism” she said. They were stunned, the first time such had ever happened to Sis. Evans. The daughter-in-law, they guessed, had told the woman she had to return the cookies. Disappointed, they drove to lunch.
They noticed another restaurant with Christmas decorations and stopped there. The waitress escorted
them upstairs where daylight came “cascading through the window.” They were happy again!
“Whatever is expedient in me will be given if ye will have faith,” paraphrasing Moroni 7:33. Continue & Triumph.

The front cover of the We Are 1 newsletter for the Nagoya Mission, a photo of returning missionaries was displayed on the left and a photo of arrivers on the right. The message is “Be One!”
Underneath was a list of baptisms in the mission from October 6 through November 17, 2013, of 8 ranging from age 50 to 13, 3 sisters including the ages of 50, 29, and 35 and 5 brothers of 38, 30, 25, 15 and 13 years of age.
For the January 1, 2014 newsletter, the photos of returners and arrivers photos were shown along with 8 additional baptisms from Dec. 1 through December 29, 2013 with 3 sisters ages 30, 26, and 16 and 5 brothers of ages 74, 70, 23, 11 and 9.
Photos of baptisms were on the right columns.
Pres. Yamashita expounded in each newsletter what I as an editor never have seen in such inspired, exquisite detail and conciseness just about everything a missionary and member needs and should know.
