THE NEW PRESIDENT of the Japanese Mission, Vinal G. Mauss, bishop of the Oakland, Calif. Ward, Oakland Stake, is preparing to leave for Japan next August with Mrs. Mauss and their two sons and a daughter.

His appointment was announced Friday by the Church First Presidency.

President Mauss will succeed Pres. Edward L. Clissold who was a commander, in the U. S. Navy stationed in the Hawaiian Islands prior to his appointment as mission president in October, 1947.

THE NEW mission president was born Oct. 16, 1900 at Murray, Utah, son of the late Michael and Lottie Wright Mauss, both staunch Church workers. Following his graduation from the old LDS High School and LDS Business College he filled a mission to Japan 1922-24.

He married Ethel Lind, musician and teacher, in 1927 and they made their home in Highland Park Ward where he was in the elders quorum presidency and in YMMIA work. They moved to Long Beach, Calif. in 1931 where they continued their activity in ward and stake work.

Since moving to Oakland in 1936 he has served as Sunday School superintendent member of the bishopric five years, president of the high priests quorum and bishop since 1946. Mrs. Mauss has directed ward choir and other choral groups and has served on the Relief Society stake board.

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
