Elder Christensen and I 21 Oct 2005
Elder Christensen was my first companian on a then 2-1/2 year mission. He was the "Supervising Elder" in Trondheim, and within 3 weeks would be called as the lead "Travelling Elder" for the northern part of the mission. One funny thing happened while with Elder C. Nearly every day for “middag,” all 10 of the missionaries in Trondheim would meet at the “premier” cafeteria eating establishment in the center of Trondheim called, “Prinsen.” Sometimes, the group would get pretty loud and do some things not truly becoming of missionaries (boys will be boys). So Elder Christensen, being the SE, first tried to set the example by not showing up, and voluntarily eating some places out in our tracting area. But, alas, when we went back to the Prinsen, because he didn’t want to be the only one not eating there, it carried on as before. So Elder C. decided to assign companionships to eat there, and everyone else must eat in their tracting area. Being magnanimous, he assigned another set of Elders the first week’s “stay” at the Prinsen. Kitty-corner to the Prinsen was the cafeteria where most of the university students ate, as kind of a hangout, and Elder C. decided to try it one day, much against his own inner feelings. That proved to be a disaster - the place was cram packed with students, and a fairly long line of people was waiting to get in. The management of the cafeteria was only allowing people in the line to enter when a suitable place was available. Since there were just two of us, we got in pretty quickly, ahead of many larger groups. Two students left the table before we were able to get it. We went through the cafeteria line, and sat down to eat. Elder C. was not one to taste first before salting all his food, and grabbed the salt shaker. Apparently, the two students who had left had seen us coming and unscrewed the lid on the salt shaker. When Elder C. went to salt his food, the lid came off and the salt in the shaker dumped all over his food. That perturbed Elder C., but only enough to complain to the management, who allowed him to fill another plate. Upon his return, a bus boy was rolling passed a cart full of dirty dishes and silverware, with salt and pepper shakers on the top shelf. As he sat down, Elder C. grabbed another salt shaker off the cart. This one also had the head unscrewed, and Elder C. dumped salt all over the second plate of food. There was no cussing, but Elder C. was so upset after getting still a third plate of food, that he called off our ever eating there again, or, for that matter, any of the missionaries. So, back to the Prinsen we all went, but more dignified and less boisterous, after the dressing down that Elder C. gave us!
