| I was a missionary in Ft. Smith in 1977 when Ft. Smith was moved to the Tulsa mission. At that time, I was transfered over to Mississippi, and stayed in the Arkansas Little Rock Mission. We lived at 1922 North "G" street in an apartment that was part of a house owned by Miss Stein, who was jewish (she lived in the front of the home). The missionaries had been staying at that location for years and years. I am just curious when Miss Stein died (she was old then) and what ever happened to the apartment (she wanted LDS missionaries there as long as she was living. When was that location discontinued for missionaries?). |

| i've been home from the mission for about six weeks now.. he'll soon find out how significant that amount of time is (it's equal to one transfer in the field). the weather is one of the most noticeable things when you enter the field, especially the long summers. i remember coming into tulsa 11 january 2002 and it was easily 70-75 degrees and HUMID. nothing you're going to be used to, that's for sure. you will acclimate after your first summer, so don't worry. i got nosebleeds my first three weeks home (because of the dry climate) and i still can't keep my hands from drying out. you have a great mission president, wonderful elders and sisters, and i can honestly say that serving in the bible belt will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. it is hard, real hard, to be a full-time missionary.. but it's so good. make the most of your time. prepare early, i want to stress that. by the way, i was born in az.. lakeside. lived there off and on during my early childhood - it's what i still call home. the mission is my second home.. utah's just where i live. good luck! |

| I have received several letters from my son since he arrived there on Aug 20,2003 He is very happy and has found the people very humble and very poor. HE is amazed at how nice they are . He hasn't had a door slammed in his face or one rude experience. He says the people are very kind and just say no thank you if they aren't interested. |

Brother Poulson,
I just returned from the OTM about 4 months ago--so most things are still pretty fresh on my mind.
Let me assure you that your son is in for the time of his life. Serving in the OTM will alllow him to have so many great spiritual experiences and gain an understanding of who he is, and the trust that the Lord has placed in him.
Temporally, he'll be in for a beautiful fall. The spring and fall throughout the OTM is heavenly. He'll freeze in the winter with the wet, cold wind. In the summer, he'll lose 5 lbs. a day in sweat. But it is on those days that he'll be given the opportunity to show his faithfulness--and he'll be rewarded greatly.
If I could have knew one thing as I entered the OTM, it would be about rejection. Share with your son stories in the scriptures when the great missionaries suffered persecution and were rejected. Because he will suffer both. But, be sure to explain to him what miracles the Lord provided when they didn't let those things stop them. If he endures, I can promise he will witness similar miracles.
Serving in the OTM was the greatest experience of my life. I pray your son has the same feeling 2 years from now.
If you have any further questions, feel free to email me directly. I'd love to help satisfy curiousity in any way that I can.
Brock W. |
