| As the only member in my family, my parents were keenly interested and concerned about me leaving for two years and not really contacting them other than letters. Although they were supportive and actually just fine with the entire process after they got used to it, my mother just could not abide two years (and two Christmases) apart. So, one day right before Christmas 1985 I got a phone call and it was President Prince. He told me that my mother had called him, was in Pittsburgh, and that she was about ten minutes away from me and coming strong.... I was immediately embarrassed and upset, and I was all ready to tell my mom off and stop her cold in her tracks.. President Prince knew about my family not being LDS, and when I asked him what I should do, he simply said "Love your mother and have a great day." What a wise, wonderful bit of counsel - it changed my entire outloook on the experience. ...And my companion and I did just that. We had a great day. She took us shopping and bought about $200 worth of groceries (seemed like a fortune!), and then bought me a new pair of shoes. She stayed the day, and then left that evening. We had a wonderful time and it turned out to be just great. I will be forever grateful to President Prince who knew better than to do any sort of rebuke or allow anything of the sort - just "love her and have a great day." We certainly did. :) |
