Special 40th Anniversary Reunion 06 Jun 2007
Dear Members of the Bacolod Mission and Missionaries who served their before and during Pres. Rose (67-70)

As part of the celebration honoring the 40 years of formal missionary work in the Philippine Islands, the Church has authorized the collection of materials from early members and missionaries who served in the Philippine Islands.

I was in Bacolod in 1968, serving in Bacolod and north, to Victorias (an organized Sunday School) and in up to Cadiz. Brother Rufio Villanueva was one of our stalwart members, attending the Bacolod Group from LaCarlota (sic).

I am looking for remembrances of the early members. We had a houselady who also baked bread for a living, using the oven purchased for the missionary quarters and meeting place.

The Garghanera family loaned the missionaries an old 55 or 56 Buick that allowed to get to the Victorias area on Sunday, after meetings in Bacolod were finished, and without having to rely on public transportation. Yes, all the Elders who served during that time had Filipino drivers licenses and drove the Buick. There was an old American in Victorias, the father-in-law of Brother Garghanera, who was a member of the Church from Price Utah. He was about 82 or 83 when the Elders discovered him in Victorias. His son-in-law had been the Mayor there, and the family loved to have the Elders stay in their home a few days each week, using the home (mansion) as a place to hang our hats while we tracted and established the Church in Victorias.

Some remarkable people joined the Church in Bacolod, including the Villanuevas. I left a BofM with a Taxi driver one Sunday evening after we had "preached" at the Town Square. I understand the Taxi driver eventually joined the Church after I had left the area.

If you have remembrances of who those early members were, please write to me at galen.updike@gmail.com. We are compiling a 40th Anniversary Book of Remembrance and submitting it the Church.

For your information, some of the Elder who preceeded me in Bacolod were: Elder Doug Buck, Elder Jim Stoddard, Elder Richard Free, Elder Harmston, Elder Shiu Narayan, Elder James Jenkins, an Elder Petersen. During my stay were: Elder Ron Jones, Elder James Hatch, Elder Lynn Wardle.

Tulunan ni Mormon 21 Feb 2007
I ordered a copy of the Hiligaynon Book of Mormon the other day. The translation is complete, although the picture on LDS.org is wrong. So if you order it they will actually send you the completed translation, now called ang Libro ni Mormon. It is great to see that it is finally done, although I really wonder about how good some of the translations are. Hope fully this helps.

Re: Travel to Filipinas 22 Aug 2006
This is in response to Brandon Ward's questions abotu travel to the Philippines. Yes, there are several of us who have returned to the Philippines, but you'll find that the answers to your questions vary greatly depending on who you talk to. For instance, my family currenly lives in the Philippines (Bacolod, to be exact) because I am assigned here for work. I did come back several times before this move, but this is definitely the best way. :)

Cost of the trip is generally around $1000 roundtrip - give or take a couple hundred. (Generally China Air has fairly decent rates). Other things like logistics depend entirely on what you want to do while you're here. That will also determine how much spending $$$ you need to bring. Nice thing is that many places will accept your credit card - but best to make sure beforehand. I recommend purchasing Lonely Planet's guide to the Philippines to help in your planning.

My experience has overall been good, but travel back to my areas generally leaves me feeling out of place and often disappointed. Still, I can't resist going back. Just be prepared for some heartbreak if you do it.

Anything more you need to know just drop a line.

Halong, ayo-ayo, ingats!

Travel sa Filipinas . . . 29 Jul 2006
I'm curious if any 'Cano/'Cana RMs have had the opportunity to return to the Philippines.

My wife and I have been trying to save for years but the money always gets spent on emergencies.

I'm curious as to:

A: The cost/planning/logistics
B: The experience
C: Expected vs. Actual results

Please share w/ us all online here, or if you wish w/ me at least in private.

Halong,

B

I don't know if everyone is aware, but the complete Hiligaynon Book of Mormon is finished and is available at the distribution center. You can find it online at the distribution center's homepage. It's not the Tulun-an anymore, but they renamed it the Libro Ni Mormon. I wish I would've had this back on the mish, it would've come in handy! Anyway, if you didn't know, it's available. Ayo-Ayo!
