Official Church News Statement 19 Oct 2004
Hey All, I had mentioned that there would be a new mission created. Joel & Matt had already posted this on the "News" portion of this site. I don't often look in that section, so I thought I would post it here.

Steve.

New mission organized in Laoag; 14th in Philippines

Three missions in the northern part of Luzou in the Philippines are being re-organized to create a fourth mission; the Philippines Laoag Mission.
The Ilagan, Baguio and Olongapo missions, with a combined estimated population of 7.6 million residents, will be re-configured to create the Laoag mission, the 14th mission in the Philippines. The mission will be headquartered in Laoag on the northwestern tip of the island.
The new mission will be created in October. It becomes the 338th mission of the Church.
The 18,910 members residing in the Laoag mission are organized into three stakes, five districts and 52 wards or branches.
Stakes included are: Batac, Laoag and Narvacan. Districts include; Aparri, Ballesteros, Bangued, Bangui and Vigan.
Jerry W. Hatch of the Idaho Falls 7th Ward, Idaho Falls Idaho North Stake, has been called to preside. He will be accompanied by his wife, Marilyn Kay Hatch. They are currently serving as senior missionaries in the Philippines area. (A biographical sketch will be included in next week's Church News).
The 46,217 members in the Baguio mission are organized into seven stakes: Baguio Bayambang, Dagupan, Lingayen, Rosales, San Fernando La Union and Urdaneta. The six districts are: Agoo, Aguilar, Bauang, Calasiao, Mangaldan and Mapandan.
The 25,470 members residing in the Ilagan mission are organized into four stakes: Burgos, Ilagan, Santiago and Tuguegarao; and, four districts; Alicia, Bambang, Cauayan and Solano.
The 21,476 members in the Olongapo mission are organized into the Balanga stake; and seven districts: Alaminos, Dinalupihan, Iba, Olongapo, Orion, San Antonio and Santa Cruz.

wow 18 Oct 2004
good advice there benge. Elder Burgon taught me that it is better if you say WOW and not ask why it makes things more exciting, and the culture is easier adjusted to.

advice 14 Oct 2004
I only have one bit of advice as far as transportation is concerned. You will find that you often need to use jeepneys or tricycles to get around. As a greenie (and this is especially true if your companion is also american) never ever ask "how much?" AFTER a trip..... the price will skyrocket. It is usually a good Idea to subtly ask another passenger what the fare is before the trip starts, so after the journey you can simply hand over your money without any arguing.
On a more general note, it may be a good idea to get really ready for a different culture altogether than anything you've ever experienced. Forget the word WHY. IF you start asking why, why, why, from the getgo, you are gonna waste alot of energy saying "that don't make no sense"!! just relax and accept the culture and traditions for what they are. Don't get caught up trying to compare everything to america. Just accept it and concentrate on understanding people and and language, and eventually it will all become clear to you.

best of luck,
KIRK

RE: Transportation 07 Oct 2004
My young friend, bring sturdy and comfortable shoes. You will walk, and walk, and walk, and walk. Unless you end up in the office you most likely will never sit behind the wheel of an automobile. I went through five pairs of shoes. The first two I brought didn't cut it. The third pair I was sent didn't cut it, either. The second to last were destroyed from flood water. And my last pair lasted me until after my mission.

Pick something sturdy and comfortable--you don't want blisters...

The new mission 03 Oct 2004
My mom sent me the article from the church news and it says it's the "Laoag" Mission. Not that spelling makes that much of a difference in the news, but just if you are looking up the city... Maybe...

Correction 03 Oct 2004
In my last message I said that:

"Those missionaries that started their missions in the Ilagan Mission, and are currently assigned in the new mission boundaries, will be adopted into the new Philippines 'BAGUIO' Mission "

I meant to say the new" Philippines Loag Mission"

Part of Ilagan Mission Divided 03 Oct 2004
**Part of Ilagan Mission to be Divided***

Hey All,

I spoke with President Gaviola on the telephone today and he told me some interesting info. On October 15, 2004, The Church will create the 14th mission in the Philippines. It will be the Philippines Loag Mission (In Ilocos Norte).

It will divide up part of the Baguio and Ilagan Missions.

All of the Appari District and the Ballesteros District will become a part of this new mission, and no longer be under the Philippines Ilagan Mission. From what I understood from President Gaviola, The most southern part of the mission will stay where it previously was, but the most northern part of the mission would end in Amulung.

Those missionaries that started their missions in the Ilagan Mission, and are currently assigned in the new mission boundaries, will be adopted into the new Philippines Baguio Mission.

Anyway, thought each of you, especially those of us who have served up north, would be interested to hear this new information.

I let you know as I hear more.

the filipinos, etc. 29 Sep 2004
My advice is to form your own opinion once you get to the Philippines. Take all of our comments with a grain of salt. Yes there is a chance of being robbed, etc., but that goes for anywhere in the world (including Provo, Utah)! That being said, I never had any problems with my stuff getting stolen. I was charged too much on jeepnies, buses, and trikes, but nothing was ever stolen from me. If you treat the Filipinos the way you want them to treat you, 99% of them will also treat you with the same respect. No where else in the world that I know of can you walk up to a complete stranger, they invite you into their house, allow you to share a brief message, AND give you a snack! Granted, not all the Filipinos are able to do this for you, but that is a large part of their culture. Never talk bad about Filipinos, their culture, their food, etc. Learn as much as you can from your Filipino companions and the members. They will help you adjust to the culture if you let them. Just remember what your purpose is as a missionary and you will do fine! I wish I had a second chance to be a missionary to the Philippines! It's the greatest mission on earth! Good luck!

re:material things and stuff 29 Sep 2004
You gotta remember the weather and the not too nice people there too. It rains in the Philippines a lot, so there's a good chance your camera will get wet. My camera was fine, but it was a basic 35mm. There's also the chance it, or your bag can get left on a tricycle, or your house can get broken into and robbed, then your camera might get stolen. Just a word of warning, take a good camera, but don't take one that's too expensive that if something happens to it, you won't regret it.
