WOW 02 Mar 2004
The response to this Message Board has been overwhelming...even from some people who are not even associated with the mission..??? Anyway it is nice to know that people still stay in contact with the mission site. I will not add any more commentary to the discussion which has already received its fair share of attention. I find it interesting though that through this whole discussion topic I was able to find out the names of several missionaries who have served in areas where I once was blessed to serve in. That is what it is all about...A brotherhood formed that will stay strong regardless of personal views. There are plenty of people with whom I associate with who have different views with respect to life, gospel and The Passion. Do I let them know my views on things? Yes. Do I judge them for their views? Well I try not to. Anyway. I am grateful to be associated with the Ilagan mission alumni. Some great memories were made and great friendships were formed to last a lifetime and beyond. I apologize if my comments offended people...They were not intended that way. Jon, congrats on the child. I have a two year old daughter and it is great! You will love it. Hope I didn't get you all riled up. Anyway...laying rest to the Passion topic...later!

See Ya Chet 02 Mar 2004
Dang, glad he's outta here. Hey everyone, I didn't mean to get people all upset here, but you're right Brown, I was hoping to get people to talk on here. Yeah. Anyway, everyone can choose for themselves. I for one, was moved by the movie. My wife didn't want to watch it, and I respect her decision for that, so I'm not judging anyone. I just hope that people will make the decision for themselves and not for hearsay about the movie. Anyway, enough about this movie, what's up all? Hope everyone is good, I'm good, my wife and I are expecting a little girl in July. Pretty exciting. Thanks to all of you who defended me, and I love you all. Except for you that I don't know. Nice to be known 02 Mar 2004
Yes, I am new to this website, I just happened to stumble upon it while looking for information on a friend that served in the mission. I read some of the comments and figured I would throw in my two cents. I must have hit a touchy topic because the website has received more traffic in the past few days than over the past few months. LOL. I can’t believe how you guys keep up to speed on your mission’s website. That is impressive. This will be my last post so to all of you who choose to watch the Passion; I hope you get your moneys worth. Just remember one thing…there is no right way to do something that is wrong. ;)

Passion 02 Mar 2004
I read an email from a friend of mine that was written by Keith Merril. Keith is the director of both "The Lamb of God" and "The Testaments" shown at the Joseph Smith memorial building. He is a close friend of our current prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. He said he would neither encourage nor discourage us to see the movie. He himself was at a private screening of the film in L.A. with Mel Gibson there. As was quoted by our mystery alumni Pres. Benson did counsel the AARONIC Priesthood to not watch rated R movies. Further counsel as Crabb mentioned was to not watch movies that encouraged violence as acceptable. This movie does not encourage violence as acceptable. He also said if we were to produce a movie about the Book of Mormon and include all the scenes of epic battles etc. then it would indeed be rated R also. Even currently the movie entitled "Saints and Soldiers" that is about Latter Day Saints and the Civil War is on the verge of receiving an R rating. The decision to see "The Passion of Christ" is personal. Keith Merril said he is going to see it again. So to say "I doubt Pres. Hinckley was in line" may be safe. But one of his close friends sure was & I doubt he is hiding the fact from our current Prophet. Again, the choice is yours.

Passion 02 Mar 2004
I don't go around telling people what to do or even use scripture to tell others what they need to do. This is totally a personal opinion on whether or not you need to see it. I'm not going to see it just because I told my wife that I wouldn't and she matters more to me than what Mel Gibson wants us to know about Jesus' sacrifice. Yes the resurrection is important and we all need to focus on that, but what do you think brought about the resurrection. (His death) so I personally think it would be a good movie to see.

Also, if the church was to ever make a true to life movie, it would be rated R just like the rest of the movies. The scriptures are graphic and there is no way to get around that fact.

So everyone that feels they need to lift themselves over others, keep the antagonism coming and I continue to laugh at all you fools.

Keep it real Betts.

The Passion 02 Mar 2004
I apologize for being blunt and somewhat satirical, but it seems very hypocritical for return missionaries to return to their mission website and promote disobeying direct counsel from the Prophet. I could be wrong, but am I the only person that sees the irony in that. I assume that on their mission these missionaries taught people that they should live a higher law, come unto baptism, and put off the natural man. I find it absolutely hypocritical that now that they are home from their missions the rules suddenly change. If you are going to kick against the pricks, keep it to yourself.

kindness and love 02 Mar 2004
People are really free to choose for themselves and it isn't our responsibility to judge them or throw scripture at them in condemnation. I really don't think Christ would support us using his words to degrade others. They were ment to lift up, not to drag down. Love your neighbor even as yourself.

Passion 02 Mar 2004
Here's a newspaper article I found interesting including comments from the LDS Church Spokesman, Kert Howard, regarding Gibson's "Passion":

LDS Church Members Weigh In on 'Passion'
February 25, 2004

Mel's new movie is also a hot topic for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

That's because church members are counseled by their leaders not to watch rated R movies and "The Passion of the Christ" is rated R.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints won't hear an official stance on Mel's new movie.

"We're not commanded in all things. We're given guidelines and we can choose for out selves whether or not we want to follow them," says LDS Church Spokesman Kert Howard.

"The admonition is that we should avoid R rated movies for what ever reason," says Howard.

It's strong council, the church doesn't back with punishment.

"No they wouldn't be punished. In fact if they were at church and they mentioned that they watched it and their bishop was standing there he'd probably just uh smile," says Howard.

LDS students at ISU's Institute of Religion disagree on whether or not they'll see the movie. Some say they'll see it.

"I'm kind of interested in seeing it just to see the point of view and how they portray it and stuff," says LDS institute student Rebecca Browne.

Others say they won't.

"From what I've seen there's a lot of... I like to focus on the resurrection of Christ. Not so much on the excruciating pain he went through," says Gregg Redd, LDS Institute student.

LDS church leaders did come out with a stance on one of their own movies showing Christ's death.

"The brethren as they reviewed it said we don't want to focus on that. We don't want to shock people in to believing in Christ," says LDS Educator & Author Cliff Rhoades.

The LDS church says it teaches principals and let's its members govern themselves.

The LDS church says even though it believes Christ died on a cross -- it chooses to focus on his life and resurrection.

The Passion 02 Mar 2004
Mr. Crabb, that is an interesting comment. Frankly I would feel a little uneasy giving more weight to an author carried by Deseret Book, than to...lets see...um....the prophet. But hey that's me, and like you said we are all free to make our own choices. If you feel you need to go see Hollywood’s rendition of Christ's life to become better acquainted with your Lord and Savior, so be it, but for every choice there is a consequence. You are fee to choose life and liberty, or death and condemnation, as long as you are satisfied with your choice. It's your life. Choose ye this day whom you will serve. In all seriousness there shouldn’t be any question.

The Passion 02 Mar 2004
I am still undecided as to whether or not I will see the film. I do have to agree with what Betts and Hernandez have said. I think it is a personal decision and when making a decision it should be an informed decision and not an ignorant one.

I have been reading up on the movie and one of the articles I read was found on DeseretBook.com under the Mormon Life tab. The article is titled, "The Passion" and "The Davinci Code" Why Latter Day Saints Do and Should Care.

Here is a small portion of the article, "When latter-day saints talk about The Passion, the stir seems to be over the movie's R-rating. Robert L. Millet, Richard L. Evans Professor of Religious Understanding at Brigham Young University, feels very strongly about the controversy that has arisen among latter-day saints over the rating. "Clearly, this is a case where our ratings system doesn't help us." When asked if viewing the film despite its R-rating would be to flout the council of church leaders, Millet responded, "It seems to me that a mature approach to this issue would entail thinking through the principles that the leaders of church have taught us concerning what we ought to view and not to view. Through the operation of that principle, I personally have chosen to view the movie because it deals with the central act in human history."

I encourage whoever is still deciding whether or not to see this film to read this article and others so you can make an informed decision.

I hope all Ilaganites are doing well!

Education 02 Mar 2004
This is a word of encouragement for all of you in school right now. I know what you're going through: I'm married with two kids and have three years left to finish with a Masters. Keep going! It's going to pay dividends in years to come....

The Value of Education
President Gordon B. Hinckley

"Education is the key to opportunity. The Lord has placed upon you, as members of this Church, the obligation to study and to learn of things spiritual, yes, but of things temporal also. Acquire all of the education that you can, even if it means great sacrifice while you are young."

(Gordon B. Hinckley, Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley, 172)
