Typhoon Reming (durian) 19 Dec 2006
We were finally able to contact family in the Phillippines. That little house we spent the last few years building was completely destroyed in the typhoon, but everyone is OK. It's been hard to make contact because the first big storm to hit the area several months ago knocked out power throughout the province. That limits every body's ability to recharge cell phones, and makes it hard for us here to be able to contact them.
We spoke a few days ago with Cherrie's brother living in Manila, and he was on his way out to Manito (the little town where Cherrie's parents live) to see if they were OK. He was especially concerned, as he had left his young daughter (about Kianna's age) with them to babysit for a while. So yesterday he finally made it down there, and we were able to talk to everyone (he brought a fully-charged cell phone with him). During the storm, the wind blew out every window, and then ripped the door off it's hinges before tearing off the entire roof and causing the joists to collapse. Cherrie's Parents and her niece took refuge under the kitchen counter and sink and waited out the storm.
We actually fared much better than many. One of our good friend here in Salt Lake has her whole family living in the same area. They were unfortunate enough to be living right at the base of the Mayon volcano. Luckily, someone in the family noticed the approaching torrent, and the entire family was able to climb to safety as the mudslides completely buried their home. It appears that they, like many other thousands, lost everything but the clothes on their backs.
Cherrie's dad says he plans to rebuild everything. We are grateful that they had a good little cinder block home, because at least all four walls are still standing. The next-door neighbor had a house made of traditional bamboo with a thatched roof, and nothing is left.
So now we are going to try to help them purchase some materials to at least repair the roof so that they can be out of the rain. It might be hard though, as the whole area is affected and I am sure that there will be significant shortages of building materials, not to mention the difficulties in transportation.

Free Trip to the PI 28 Nov 2006
I just got back from a cruise to the Philippines at the American taxpayers' expense. I can't really recommend this mode of travel because to be eligible you have to sign away four years of you life to Uncle Sam. My accomodations aboard the USS Juneau left much to be desired. Anyway we were there to participate in a training exercise with the Armed Forces of the Philippines. We trained with the Philippine Marines at Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija and no, I was not allowed to visit the mission even though Nueva Vizcaya is just up the road a piece. I may post the full story of my trip in the stories section and hopefully I can figure out how to post my photos if anyone is interested.

RE: Hawai'i Alum and family 16 Oct 2006
Jason,

Thanks for checking up on us. As far as my family and I we're doing ok. Fortunately enough no one got hurt and there weren't any casualties. We finally got power after waiting for more than 12 hours. Everything is back to normal and we continue to hope for the best. It's a good thing the church teaches us the importance of being prepared and having a 72 hr kit, etc. Anyways, take care and hope all is well.

v/r,

Paul

Hey you guys 03 Oct 2006
Its good to read a few familiar names on here from the good old Prez. Miole days... nice to see you're doing good Master Bates. I've never actually posted a comment on here... in fact i think this is the first time i've been on this site since the year 2000. I sure have missed you guys. I sort of put an update on my profile, but I figured i should at least leave a quick message. Life is going pretty well. I'm finally on the career path thats right for me and I will be leaving Provo soon. I'm not married yet... I broke off an engagement earlier this year and i havent dated much since. Jon Hernandez and I keep in touch but thats about it. I would love to hear from any of you guys i served with. hope all is well.

AY 27 Sep 2006
It's been a long, long time since I came on the website. Not sure why, just sorta forgot about it. My wife, daughter Pohainani, and I are living in Kirksville, MO attending Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. I'm working on a masters degree in human anatomy education. Pretty fun stuff but the bigger goal is to get started in the medical program next fall.

Things are good with us. I'm a primary teacher and my wife is in the Relief Society presidency. We both keep pretty busy but it keeps us doing what we should.

Would love to hear from anyone!

I forgot to post... 20 Sep 2006
Abby and I had our first baby a month and a half ago. Elizabeth (Ellee) Rae was born on August 10th. 6lbs4.5ozs and 18 3/4" She came right before my first pharmacology and evidence based medicine exams. Needless to say, school hasn't been going to good this year, but Abby and Ellee are doing great. It is fun to have a baby at home (because Abby does all the work) and do have a little one to cuddle. I am still clueless as a father, but I figure everyone has had kids for hundreds of year, so I should eventually be able to figure it out.
Sorry to hear about your trip Crabb. I hate that when life seems to put you on the bottom bunk in a Port-a-John. Reminds me of my spring break trip to Utah last March... I hope everthing gets sorted out okay!
Anyway, best wishes to all!
(And thanks for the music links Benge... My Filippino CD's were all in that car that disappeared so I have really enjoyed the tunes)

Busy Times 20 Sep 2006
Hello all! Benge, thanks for the links. I had bought some cd's in the philippines and slowly they've all dissapeared. It's been fun to listen again.

Things are going well. We've all heard the phrase "when it rains it pours". We went on a trip to Lake Powell the first part of this month and had a blast. It rained a little but other than that we had a great time and our kids spent a lot of time building sand castles, swimming and riding on the tube behind the boat. Then the "rain" started. The day before we came home a few of us decided it was time to pump up the water-weenie and have a little fun. We did have fun for about 20 minutes then we crashed and my forehead slammed the back of my little brothers head. To make a long story short we ended up in the emergency room in Page, AZ getting stitches. Then it started "pouring". As we drove into Page and my phone found service I had a text message from my boss saying that I needed to call my mother-in-law ASAP because my house had flooded. A hose under the master bathroom sink came off and about 300 gallons of water later my bro in law came to feed my dog and found a very wet house. My in-laws contacted the insurance and they scheduled the clean up. We lost all of the carpet pad, floor boards, and door jams upstairs and downstairs we lost all that and the drywall and insulation had to be taken out. Thank goodness for homeowners insurance huh?! So we are back living with my inlaws in Ogden for a few weeks till they get our house put back together. Hopefully that is soon because Monica is due in a couple of weeks with our third and we'd like to be home and get things ready for the new arrival but we'll see.
I don't want anyone to make the mistake and think I am complaining. We're doing great, just wanted to update those that care on our crazy life.

Free Tagalog music 31 Aug 2006
Hey guys, what's up? I guess nobody really ever posts anything anymore. I just wanted to say that Cherrie finally got her citizenship, and then last week we finished her dual-citizenship and renewed her Philippines passport. That's the news in our life for anyone that cares.
I also wanted to say that I found this great website with streaming music. http://opmhits.net/
You can listen to Asin, Eraserheads, Michael V, Regine Velasquez etc... some of the files seem to be outdated though, and I couldn't get any of the Rivermaya songs to play last time I tried.

In fact, you can actually download songs from the site and save them on your computer (with a little ingenuity).

If you want to see and hear some of my favorite Filipino music, you can also listen to my youtube playlist at http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=B9BEF3DAC0C02046

I only have 15 or so songs on there, but they are some of my favorites.

Good Times 07 Aug 2006
Hello everyone. Jen and I just added a second child to the Powell family. We already have Jacob (3 on 9/25) and now Kylie who was born 7/14. Sorry however Coy, I don't know what the trick to having a girl was/is. Other than that I am still selling Audis in SLC for Strong Audi. I would love to play some ball or BBQ with any of you living or visiting the SLC area. I recently golfed with Bottomfield, Boyer (Faux was supposed to come, but busted his head swimming the night before!). Hope all is well with each of you and your families.

Update 01 Aug 2006
Hello everyone, long time since I posted on here. Congratulations to Frandsen and Coy (Andrew, do they have early morning seminary in Utah or are you living somewhere else?). I am currently entering my last year at ASU (a lot of people go to school for 8 years!). We bought our second house recently and just added another member to our family. He was born on Friday, the 28 of July and is doing fantastic. I had some vacation time stored up at UPS and used it to help with the little one. We are now a family of four and truckin right along. Crabb, good luck with those sprinklers, I did mine in the first house and it was tedious. Take care everyone, its good to see so many posts lately.
