| Some of you who have served in Portugal know that "planting seeds" is pretty much what sums up our missions. Well, I would love to know what, if anything, happened to a seed we planted on Terceira in 1999. My companion Sis. Hornberger and I were so frustrated with the work and we just didn't know what to do. We prayed really hard to know where to go to tract and find someone who was ready for the gospel. We decided to make the long trek to Agualva. We went to the farthest part of the city at the top of a hill and began knocking. No one was home at the first couple of houses, but then we came to a gray stone house where we met Cristina. She let us in and we presented the 1st. It was awesome! During the next 2 weeks, Cristina read the whole Book of Mormon and asked for other church books to read. We gave her "Nosso Legado". She even came to our church building for a lesson and committed to baptism. She said she would have to ask her husband for permission, but she was willing. Unfortunately, the next day was Sunday and we arrived at the building to find the window to the front door smashed in and a bag containing Cristina's copy of the Book of Mormon and a note. I still have that note. Cristina said her husband refused to give her permission and was very angry. She said, "who am I to disobey my husband?" But she also said that she would never forget what she read in the Book of Mormon and the testimony she had gained. We never got back the copy of "Nosso Legado". I imagine it's still hiding somewhere in her humble home. |
