| I don't check this site very often, so I was surprised not too long ago to read the December '04 "news" post that Elder Terry Hammon of Idaho had passed away. I was Elder Hammon's first companion: We lived behind the Tuana'i chapel and proselyted from Afega to Leauva'a. Elder Hammon was a sturdy pig farmer from Idaho who was very surprised that 1) they used to let the pigs ta'a i aso la and root up everything around the fale sa; and 2) the pigs were so small because they weren't fed like he would have fed them back on the farm. Our area included several dirt roads that ran mamao tele i uta, soso'o ma le itu o Aleisa, and it was our practice to pick one of the roads to proselyte along for an entire day, walking our bikes uphill as far as the tala'iga took us until about 5 p.m. Then, after our last visit, we'd hop on the bikes and blast all the way down the mountain to the auala tele. One day we were about half-way down and I was in the lead when I happened to turn around -- te'i -- just as a stick bounced into the spokes of Elder Hammon's bike, bringing him to an abrupt halt and throwing him over the handle bars. As I mentioned, he was a tough guy: He quickly got up and got back on. Of course, the Samoan kids who were amo'ing their avega mamafa down the road thought it was hilarious. Ta fefe! |
