Taga two-seater 27 Apr 2005
Elder James Ah Mu's story of the fale vao in Nofoali'i reminds me of a little two-seater perched over the edge of a small cliff that dropped straight into the ocean at Taga, Savaii. In early 1967 all the Falelima District missionaries went to the small branch in Taga one Sunday to present the sacrament meeting program, and after dinner but before the long drive back visited this most unusual example of the facilities in those days. First, I couldn't help noticing the wood bracing it at a 45-degree-angle into the side of the cliff didn't look all that sturdy. Going inside, it quickly became apparent the flush was provided by the wave action straight below . . . but it wasn't until one of those waves crashed into the base of the small cliff and sent a sudden updraft back up through the holes. You had to time it just right.
