We are making arrangements to pick up our son in October. We are having a very difficult time choosing an affordable hotel in Cape Town. With all the different areas, we aren't sure where the best and safest places are. Has anyone picked their missionary up and can you suggest a decent hotel in a convenient location? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I couldn't wait to let everyone know that I was just called to be the new Ward Missionary Leader! I'm thrilled about it, because I can relate so much to both sides, and I'm eager to make a difference.
It's almost like I knew somehow, because I just recently put out some pictures of the Missionaries that taught me, I've been going through my Mission photos and reminiscing, I googled Derek Kearl (my first Comp) and found this site again, and all just before the Bishop gave me the news yesterday.

I am the mother of Adam Biehn who went into the MTC on 10/27/04. I just wanted to give the new missionaries a word to the wise regarding their luggage. We bought all the required items on the list, including a new set of luggage. I was concerned when we got a letter from the Mission President informing us that the luggage could not weigh more than 42 pounds. I called the Missionary Travel Office and asked them about the weight restrictions. I was told that there was no problem getting everything from here to Cape Town - the problem was transferring within Cape Town - that is where the 42 pounds comes in. They said to take everything, that a lot of times the missionaries would leave extra items behind at the mission home and then pick them up on the way back. When Adam got ready to leave the MTC (and the other Elders leaving at the same time), they were given instructions regarding their luggage. I wish I had room to type it verbatim. In essence it says they want missionaries to arrive with "as close to 42 pounds as possible. Some arrive from the states with 2 pieces of checked luggage, which only adds to the weight." They advised putting everything in 1 piece of luggage "with a weight of 42 lbs. and a piece of carry-on luggage (17 lbs)." They say there it no where to store anything at the mission and everything they need can be purchased there. The fine for overweight luggage is R20 per kilogram which is quite expensive. Some missionaries end up giving away belongings to people that need it which is nice, but why buy it if you can't use it? BTW, despite what your first instructions say, they do not need to take irons, hangers, bedding, etc. They are all provided so don't bother to take them. Adam ended up sending his small check-in suitcase home along with several items including a couple of white shirts, extra work clothes, the lining to his coat (I hope he doesn't need it!), etc. The other Elders that were to travel with him also sent items home. So, just make sure you keep to the weight limits BEFORE you get to the MTC and BEFORE you spend so much money - it will save you some grief! Hi, my name is Daniel (soon to be Elder) Standage. I have a question for current or recently returned missionaries. My mom is freaking out and I was wondering (that's how it usually goes, isn't it) whether or not missionaires can use email on their mission. I know sometimes it can be different with each mission, and I was just wondering if that's something we can do? If we can, are there certain areas that are harder to access email from? Do we just keep on using our old email, or do we need to get one from the mission or the church or something? Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
