Catching Criminals for Service Hours? Why Not? 30 Jul 2002
Our story begins in Mowbray. We had a nice boarding that was actually a members home he let us stay in for about 3-4 months while he was in Namibia. One night after a ward party and eating lots of Chocolate Chip cookies made by yours truly, we came home to find our front gate wide open. We always shut it and locked it, so I pulled over right there and we got out of the car. We heard a crash and saw someone jump the fence. We all started to chase him. Elder Nield stopped and said, “I’ll just go back and call the police”, while Elder Strausser and I continued the pursuit. Finally Strausser caught up the guy (someone we had actually given a Book of Mormon to) and grabbed the back of his shirt. All he had were my baseball hat some change and a comb. The police arrived and said we “should have just **** killed him, it would have saved us a lot of paper work!” (Can you believe that?) We had to go to court to testify that it was my hat (he had actually tried to get one of our bikes – that was the crash we heard). He got ten years for the crime. A couple weeks later while driving through down town Cape Town after a dinner appointment, Elder Greensides noticed a man break a buckie window and reach in to grab something and then put it up his shirt. We were amazed and wondering what we could do when a police car passed us. We quickly flipped a U turn and got him to pull over. We pointed the guy out and followed them to help find him. We helped chase him in our car until he ran through a set of flats. Strausser and Greensides jumped out and started chasing him while I drove around the block to try and head him off. With our help and help from spectators in cars the police caught him, threw him in their car and drove off. Chalk it up as service hours!
